This and other CDs arrived 2 weeks earlier in great condition. As for the music, I'm now a huge fan of Eri Sasaki, it's easy to listen to her on a regular basis without getting tired of it; credits to the healing quality of her voice. As of the album itself, I love each and every song in it. From the ones that were specifically written for shows and games, to the ones that Sasaki-san wrote herself. I suspect I'll be buying every one of any album she releases from now on.
Some comments on the songs:
1./7. ‘Ring of Fortune’ is probably her most well-known song as it’s her debut single and teh anime was well-received. This one and ‘Otoninaru’ (which I believe was released in the same single CD) sound technically challenging to sing, which exhibits Sasaki-san’s particularly good control of her voice. In the DVD, there were points in the video where you’ll see Sasaki-san deliberately put in the effort to hit the notes. ‘Otoninaru’ is such a fun and unique song, and I love the playfulness of the vocals - it’s actually the one that probably made me a fan, when I was exploring Sasaki-san’s songs after I first heard her work in Yuru Camp (Fuyubiyori).
2. ‘Be Clear’ is such a cool, steady song. It’s probably my third favorite song in the album after ‘Period’ and ‘Otoninaru’.
3./10. ‘Recalling’ and ‘Last Diary’ are perfect fits as follow ups to ‘Ring of Fortune’ in the Plastic Memories lore. They have the same personality as ROF, particularly the latter.
4. Sasaki-san has been praised for her good English pronunciations in ‘Gate of Steiner’. I think there are a few spots that can be improved (e.g., when she sings words like “destiny”), but if you’re used to listening to native Japanese singers (exceptions are those like Celeina Ann, who’s half-American(?)), this is not a big issue. In the end her voice is able to carry the song.
5. ‘Shampoo’ is the light-hearted song of the album. Personally I tend towards the more dark or powerful songs so it might be my least favorite, but I don’t hate it either. I saw a promo video of the album featuring this song as the background, and it worked well.
6. ‘Pausing’ sounds like the darkest song in the album, and from what I’ve gathered it’s also the oldest song in the album. It like it as such and is another favorite; its presence in the album represents Sasaki-san’s growth as a person, and proof that she’s much more than her more well-known and cheerful hits.
8./9./11. ‘Star seed’, ‘Hazel Eyes’, and ‘Prayer’, from what I understand, are some of the newest songs in the album. The first one gives me the same feeling as ‘Pausing’ so I like it as well.
12. ‘Period’ is definitely my favorite song of the album. Maybe my favorite song of hers (not sure yet if I like Haruka Naru Tabi better). The chorus is so powerful and presents a stark contrast to the spoken verses. It also helps that I’ve seen the music video where Sasaki-san did everything from the directing to animating; so I think this represents my fandom: that beyond her famous voice, she is also an amazing artist with a lot of other talents to share.
As for the DVD, love it as well. I like that DIY feel of it, musicians working together to come up with something nice and relaxing (seemingly aligned with Sasaki-san's special way of soothing the listener, like in her Yuru Camp work). For a fan who's outside Japan and has difficulty in seeing or listening to her live, this DVD is a treasure. I hope she does something similar for her future full albums.
