This isn't the debut album. It isn't. This is the album that will divide the fan base, and leaves the music at the pure simplicity of personal choice. And personally, I am addicted. The 1975 are the greatest UK band of these past years and they deserve recognition for their seamless ability to bring older music a new, fresh flavour. A personal reason I love the 1975 is because of their blend of dashing guitar, saxophone, drum and synth work that works so well even today. This album has no genre. It's clear that that's how the band wanted us to see this masterpiece.
The album kicks off with the intro' 'The 1975', which pays homage to first intro track of the debut album. It's better, because it's SO anthemic. This is the song where the band come on stage and the crowds are screaming, the lights dim...
And suddenly we burst into 'Love me', the first song released as the new (pink!) 1975. This has a very strong hint of other songs, particularly 'New Sensation' by INXS, but it's a very danceable, drunken track that pokes fun at the band itself, 'you look famous, let's be friends'.
The next song is UGH! as funky and infectious as Love me, and then 'Change of heart', which slows the mood, but keeps the brilliant new synth work that have made the 1975 so timeless.
'She's American' is fantastic, and very complimentary of the drum work, but bares so much resemblance to 'She Way Out' it's almost frustrating.
'If I believe you' has received some negative reviews, but I disagree. This track is stylish and moody, somewhat 'The Weeknd' style of smooth and delicious. The bass line carries the song, alongside the soulful choir and melodic choruses.
'Please be Naked' is that first moment where you think, "this isn't for everybody." The song Medicine received mixed reviews from fans, somewhat because it was mainly instrumental, and some people were put off by this. If so, this album might not get their hopes up. 'Please be Naked' is sad, it's emotional, it makes you think.
'Lostmyhead', too, is also instrumentally based. However, this is more upbeat and features the soft higher voice of Matt. The guitar work half way through will make this song both uplifting and fantastic live.
'The ballad of me and my brain', a bit of a mouthful, is a legacy that Matt will leave behind. His vocals are sublime, as he jokes about losing his brain as though it were his car keys or bank card. He asks, almost shouting, 'where would I be if I were my brain?'. He laughs at himself through the song, and carries the undertone choir beautifully along in a thoughts provoking, chilling song.
Next, 'Somebody Else', another good single that will always emphasise the beauty of the 1975's softer, mellow work. This is sad, almost crudely perfect for a breakup. And then, 'Loving Somebody follows, and Matty almost raps the entire song with an awesome ease that would make Ed Sheeran blush. Lyrically, he is very clever. He knows that. We know that. The song is danceable, even though the chorus is a repetition of the title. This is where the 1975 break boundaries: this is almost house, almost r&b, hip hop... But so much more.
The album title track will be a decisive change in what the fans feel about the album. 6, almost 7 minutes of instrumental will put people off, especially after the singles promised more of the same quirky funk and groove, but this is a very beautiful track. However, it doesn't fit with the album, and gives off something of an EDM feel by the more upbeat ending.
'The sound' and 'This must be my dream' is what made the 1975 special in the first place: great guitar licks, great lyrics, thumping choruses. I feel 'the sound' is making a personal dig at all generic pop-band songs though, which the 1975 have tried to avoid. I feel this is a personal joke critics will be ignorant towards!
The final 3 tracks, 'Paris', 'Nana' and 'She lays down' are a revelation for many fans; they are slow and infectious. Paris is one to be listened to again and again, Nana is tear-provoking as Matt tells a personal story of losing his Nana. The last two tracks are acoustic, and finish the album off with a beautiful slowness. Matt sings of how he doesn't believe in religion, but how he hopes his nan still sees and listens to him. This is a really personal, lovely song.
And in an hour, the album is over and on first listen you're unsure of what to think. The 1975 have thrown so much at you: it's been quiet, its been loud, thought provoking, danceable, beautiful... And that's it. Already, I want more.

Fairly new to listening to The 1975, I was conflicted about purchasing this on vinyl. I went out on a limb and bought " Being Funny in a Foreign Language" based on a couple of live performances on YT and was immediately in love with the album and the band. I took a chance on this one too after only hearing a couple of songs and, I must say, I received it yesterday and am absolutely thrilled. First of all, amazing quality vinyl. Sounds fabulous on my turntable. And the music is just incredible. Can't believe I didn't hear of them sooner. Will continue my deep dive into their library, Highly recommend!

A Mix Between 80s Pop Perfection and Experimental Drones

I've been a fan of The 1975 since Chocolate came out and I saw them supporting Muse back in 2013 (Muse fans are really hard to please by the way, I was disappointed with non-enthusiastic crowd), I loved their debut album and I was sure to see them again, songs like Sex, The City, She's Way Out, Settle Down, Pressure stuck in my head for a good 6 months.
When 'Love Me' came out last year I wasn't too interested in it as I felt it was trying too hard to sound like Peter Gabriel's Sledge Hammer mixed with Prince's - Kiss, I liked UGH! a lot better, but still wasn't convinced about this follow up album, then 'The Sound' followed and I liked this song from the first listen, very catchy, although it could do with a decent snare beat.
On first listen of the album I wasn't too sure what I was listening to, considering they claimed "The 1975" dead on social media, they began the album with a rework of the intro from their debut, albeit, a really nice surprise, it filled me with confidence that they'd continued in the same direction as the debut.
'She's American' was the first song that grabbed me, and a song I listen to on repeat A LOT at the moment. Then we the album begins to get patchy and incoherent, there are long 6 minute plodding 'interludes' such as' Please Be Naked' and the 'album title track', these songs really interfere and disrupt the flow of the album. 'If I Believe You' isn't very interesting, in fact it sounds like Prince's - Nothing Compares 2 Me.
'Lostmyhead' is a nice shoe gaze-esq song, a nice surprise in the middle of the plodding "Please Be Naked" and the questionable "The Ballad of Me and My Brain"
Things start to pick up with 'Somebody Else', a nice mid tempo 80s ballad type song, 'Loving Someone', another interlude type song, although a bit more catchy than the others previously mentioned.
'This Must Be My Dream' is a great slice of 80s pop heaven, the bass synth is gorgeous, reminiscent of Kim Wilde's You Came era, Madonna's - True Blue album, also it wouldn't be out of place on Carly Rae Jepsen's new album (if you like late 80s pop production be sure to check out E*MO*TION, Let's Get Lost is bliss), the saxophone is great.
Paris is a nice tune, but nothing special, and the remaining 2 tracks are slow acoustic tracks, 'She Lays Me Down' being completely stripped and raw, not really why I listen to this band, I tend to change albums when these come on, they aren't very interesting.
I was going to give this album a 4 as the songs that are good, are great, but there's so much stuff on here that doesn't interest me, I won't say they are filler, as I know the band have experimented a lot and this is the material they've worked hard writing and recording in the studio, but when I hear the perfect 80s production on 'She's American' and 'This Must Be My Dream', a long with the great shoe gaze quality of 'Lostmyhead', I feel as though this album could have been a lot better if they went more in this direction, rather than long 'interludes' you'd expect to find on the b-side.
Also, If you're after a song like "Sex" you won't that on here, it's a very polished production. I feel they've gone more in the direction of songs like 'M.O.N.E.Y.' and 'Talk!', my least favourite tracks on the debut.
