I am an American user; I bought this device directly off amazon.co.jp, paid in USD using my local American bank's debit card (submitting a travel notice to notify them of the sale), without the use of a third-party buyer, and they shipped to the United States quickly and without issue. Some American sites (looking at you, good e-reader and ebay!) have this device marked up to nearly $600, when I bought it here, without issue, for a little over $300 USD, shipped to the US.
The device works like a charm, I use it for writing lyrics, poetry, essays, and journaling (using the calendar). I've used it nearly every day since I've had it, and carry it around with me more than I do my phone. I was looking for a focused writing device with editing capabilities and this clamshell form factor, so I considered the Freewrite Traveler and the DM30 and DM100. The Freewrite is around $600, and I assume that's the reason that american sites have the DM250 marked up to the same range. Though I don't speak or write Japanese, I felt like I would have found the red "new" keys on the freewrite more distracting than the Japanese characters on the DM250. The freewrite's smaller screen size and screen lag (because it's not made for editing, only drafting) meant that this Pomera DM250 was a better match for me, and I love it! The lithium ion battery, USB-C charge port, and lack of buttons labeled in a language I can't read next to the screen made this the device that I would have coveted, had I got the DM100 instead. While the DM30 has a desirable e-ink screen, all those moving parts seem a lot less durable than a simple clamshell, especially for a device I use nearly daily.
I'd tried to create a device similar to this by installing linux on a chromebook, and then stripping it of everything but the text editor, but it was still far inferior to this, in terms of simplicity and productivity. All the custom hack jobs I did to make it focused still required work-arounds and navigating a custom OS, and the chromebook also had an annoying proprietary charging cable. My thoughts are happy to come right out on this device, with nothing to distract me but my other thoughts.
