『シャイニング』などにインスパイアされたと思われるシュールレアリスム・ホラーの名作。大胆不敵で、不安で、トラウマになりそうな、謎に包まれた恐怖のスリラーでもある。 ホームレス・マンの登場には注意を！ ホラーコアの神髄。それにこの映画の意味がわからないと言うのなら、最低50回は観てください。きっと解ります。意味不明という批評こそ意味不明。

例のあのエスプレッソのシーン。この映画を初めて観たとき、お行儀の非常に悪い芝居の俳優が、これがなんと、この音楽家だと知って驚いたものです。隣にすわってるギョロ目のダン・ヘダヤが、この人がまた、問答無用だぁっ、とばかりに大声を上げるに至って、もう私は幸福の絶頂で、いつも大笑いです。　ジャン＝ピエール・ジュネ監督の「ロスト・チルドレン」で初めて知ったこの音楽家。特典ｄｖｄのインタビューで、このシーンの話がきけて、ほんとにうれしかったです。

私は特にデヴィッドリンチのファンではなく、今まで観てきたのは「イレイザーヘッド」、「ロストハイウェイ」そしてテレビシリーズ「ツインピークス」。この中で最も有名なのはツインピークスであろう。私は随分前にDVDボックスを購入し、途中まで観た。そこで気がついたのはデヴィッドリンチ監督は、観客に興味を持たせる天才だということ。ツインピークスでその才能を存分に発揮し、アメリカだけでなくここ日本でも多くの大ファンを獲得した。しかしこの興味が作品の最後まで持続するかというと…「うーん」と思う。途中からなんであんなに複雑にしてしまうのだろうとこの監督の作品を見るたびに思う。ツインピークスなんて殺人犯の正体がわかってしまうとなんか気持ちが萎えてしまった。
そこでこの作品である。やはり最初はめちゃくちゃ面白い。あの事故のシーンでガッツリ心が掴まれた。しかしあの青い箱を開いて以降、やっぱり萎えた。しかし今回は比較的わかりやすい方だと思う。あと主人公の2人がとても美しいので映像を観てるだけで心が踊る。ただそれだけなら別にこの作品である必要もない気がする。まぁ時間とお金にほんのちょっと余裕がある人が観れば良いかなと。

最初に知人から借りて観た20年前は、ストーリーが理解できませんでした。年齢を重ねた今、こちらを購入して見直したところ、だいぶわかりました。
冒頭と最終章以外は願望による妄想なんでしょう。
見る度に発見がある深いストーリーと、キレのある美しい映像が素晴らしいと思います。
