The UI just doesn't work. You have to repeatedly tap to make anything work. It makes the sound and sometimes the button lights up but it rarely has any effect and makes playing very laborious. No fun to be had here.
EDIT- I thought it only fair to add that this honest revue is for the android versions of DQ 1 & 2 bought from the Amazon app store for use on my 2 Day old Nokia 5.1 Android Phone. You might have a different experience on a different set up but this app just did not perform on mine.

EDIT 2 - I have re installed both games and they now work fine.

TL:DR - This is, by far, the BEST version of this game ever made. This game has several remakes, but this one takes the cake.
For veteran DW/DQ fans, this will be a memberberry fueled trip to Nostaglia Town. For old school RPG fans that never got into Dragon Quest/Warrior - this will let you see what you missed, but don't expect a lot of depth. For newcomers to RPGs - this is a good learning tool for "My First RPG" while still being engaging and fun.

HISTORY LESSON - WITH IMPROVEMENTS

I played "Dragon Warrior" (the name for the US version of the original Dragon Quest on the NES) back in 1986. I got it Christmas Eve and had it beat before I had to go back to school in the first week of January. Looking back, that's not as amazing a feat as I thought at the time, but the fact that it kept me engaged to play for hours during my school holiday break illustrates how much I enjoyed the game back then.

Also in hindsight, the game had some issues that would keep it from holding up well for today's gamer.... Fortunately - *THIS* version of Dragon Quest 1 addresses almost all of them.

The grinding is dialed back, so you level up slightly faster. The interface is VASTLY improved and streamlined (no more having to click on "Stairs" to use the stairs your character just walked on). The graphics have a boost - but not so much they no longer have the X-bit retro look. (I'm not sure if the style is truly 8-bit, but it wouldn't be more than 16-bit.)

And with this now being a mobile game, what grinding there is works great - because maybe you don't have time to get the next item on your list -- but you can run around and gain a couple hundred XP on your work break.

FOR NEWCOMERS

If you've never picked up an RPG before - this might be a good starting point for you. It is not a long game. There isn't a lot of depth. At the time the original game came out, this was due to the constraints of the hardware as well as the newness of the genre. Its lack of complexity also served then, as it could now, as a gateway game for players who had never heard of "XP" or "Leveling up" before.

Talk to EVERYONE. Because it was originally written in a way to not waste any storage space - every NPC is there for a reason. And sometimes the hint you need to find the next step in your quest is being held onto by some random townsperson back in the 2nd city you come across.

There are also tons of guides online for this game, since it's been around for 3 decades, and has been ported to many platforms, the guides may use different graphics, or slightly different names for things - but you should be able to follow pretty much any of them.

OVERALL

I love this game! The music, the simple storyline, knowing where everything is... it's just a joy for me to play. And if you are a fan of the series - you owe it to yourself to check this version out for sure.

Mittlerweile 31 jahre alt das erste Dragon Quest.
Für mich, jemand der noch nie auf dem Smartphone Spiele gespielt hat, erstaunlicherweise eine super Sache. Ich liebe DragonQuest und habe einige davon auf dem NDS spielen können. Habe mir gleich noch den 2. Geholt und danach wirds bestimmt noch so weiter gehen. Für jeden der auf Old School RPG steht sollte zuschlagen.
