Yul: The Man Who Would be King (英語) ハードカバー – 1989/11/6

Yul Brynner had 3 major roles in his career.Pharoh in "The Ten Commandments".Given that Pharoh was drowned in the Red Sea he couldnt very well reprise that.Chris in "The Magnificent Seven" which he played twice. Then there was The King in "The King And I".Apart from winning an oscar for the film he played the role on stage over 4000 times. However he was virtually imprisoned by it.His maintenance expenses for his staff and his castle in France were so high that he had no option to play and keep playing the role.Ironically it only gave him about 2 weeks a year to stay at the castle he was working so hard to maintain. This in turn led to the end of his second marriage and the set of circumstances which seem to arise with so many ageing stars.Marrying a much younger woman and then signing a will which virtually excludes everyone but his youg wife.Thereby causing much unhappines with his children after his death. It therefore says much for the author that he is able to tell the story in such an objective manner and without any real hatred and scorn. He is blunt and honest not just about himself but about Yul.This is quite refreshing when so many similar books by children either end up as hagiography or a hatchet job.
A careful choice of Circumventing Words.....2018年5月8日に英国でレビュー済み
This book has a great insight into a man , who would be An Enigma. There have been many comments made about Yul, but I, for one, admire Rock`s careful choice of Circumventing Words, regarding his justly-famous father. !
