This book is incredible! Though it is long, one does not have to read the entire book to learn what can or might be involved in caring for a parent. Even if you read the first 100 pages, you will know more than you ever did about caring for a parent (if you've never done so) and this book may help you make your decision on whether or not this is something you should or would be able to do. The author does say repeatedly that every situation differs, even between a mother and a father.
The author leaves out no details in everything involved in caring for both his father and his mother, so if this is something you are considering, I highly recommend reading it. Depending on their condition, which could worsen with time, a full-time caregiver may be responsible for things you never dreamed you would have to do. It can be like caring for a baby, only much more difficult because a parent does not get embarrassed at caring for a baby. A baby usually does not have the myriad of medications to take as many parents do. Changing a parent's diaper is just not the same as changing a baby's diaper. Nor is cleaning up a messy diaper. If a parent becomes unable to walk, it means picking them up and placing them on the toilet or in the shower, or putting them in the car--without hurting them. Caring for a parent can mean that every time you take them to the doctor or they are admitted to the hospital, your parent will be physically checked--all over--for any bruises or marks. You, as a caregiver, may be asked many questions each time they are admitted. If anything is questionable, authorities may be called in to question you.
If you, or anyone you know, is at the point of caring for a parent or placing them in a home, which many cannot afford to do, I highly recommend that you take the time to purchase this book and read it. Many who teach classes on caring for a parent have never done so themselves, so what they've learned is from a text book or from talking with others. This author spent almost 20 years caring first for his father then for his mother who, at one point, found she could not walk. This is a real life story.
