Winner in You had uplifting songs, sultry and sexy love ballads, and some pop songs that could get you dancing. This album's intent was to maintain Labelle's star status in the 1983 to 1986 period, but the album also was a showcase for Labelle's lavish vocal stylings.
My favorite songs on this album were track 2 (On My Own) and track 4 (Kiss Away the Pain). It's sad that Patti and Michael McDonald never worked together again on a duet after working on track 2 back in the production period of this album. Then there's Kiss Away the Pain. You could just feel Patti's passion for singing on that song, that's one of the reasons why it was one of the better songs on the album.
Even on album filler songs like Twisted (track 5) and Beat My Heart Like a Drum (track 8), Patti came with it when it came to the vocals. She carried both of those songs which were essentially 1980s-centric pop and album filler songs.
In conclusion, Winner in You went platinum less than three months after its release mainly because of Patti's star power at the time of its release and because of the undeniable hit song she did with Michael McDonald, On My Own. But look deeper into the album and you'll see some non-singles and other singles on the album that were gems mainly because of Patti's singing and the lyrics attached to the songs. I would recommend this album to anyone who wants to listen to a quality album from an artist who was in one of her prime periods (1983 to 1986) of her career.
