This book was a quick and fun read for my daughter. The text on each page is printed 3 times: first in English, then again in Japanese script, and then a third time in the same Japanese translitterated to Romaji (Japanese written in English alphabet). The Japanese script was at just the right level for my daughter to practice reading, and having the Romaji text as well allowed her to learn how to read any kanji herself that she may not have known yet. All in all the book is well done and a fun read for an elementary school aged kid. This book would also be a useful tool when used in reverse for a Japanese student trying to learn English. However, I was surprised by some sloppy editing that made it seem like an amateur prublication and not published by a professional company (Actually, I think this IS a self published book, not from a professional printing house, which of course is not a problem at all and I am thankful that someone is out there writing and printing bi-lingual books like this!). For example, right on the front cover, the Japanese title is misprinted in that the second to last character, which should be a Japanese hiragana "ki" is instead showing as a simple square. (This phenomenon happens frequently when a word processor does not recognize the character code used in a specific font set and displays just a box for the unknown character instead of the intended letter.) It amazes me that this kind of simple error escaped the notice of the editors, and right on the front cover no less.
Other than that odd error on the cover (which is duplicated on the inside title page), I thought this book was a great learning tool and my daughter loved it.

This delightful little story tells of a young girl's time with her grandmother as she relates to a legend of Where Hummingbirds Come From. Grandmother explains the magic waters and the beauty of this tiny bird. Where Hummingbirds Come From may well become an all-time children's classic and a perfect book for the young reader. As well as a wonderful study guide for English as a second language students.

Loved it

This book was an instant draw because I love Japanese kid stories. Moreover, I love the fact that this was printed right in the US so it has a homespun feel to it. I've been grabbing up her other books too and using them to start exposing my own child to the Japanese language so that he can get used to hearing it and they have all been very helpful.

For those who want to study reading Japanese, this is a fun book. It is a children's book, so it fairly easy reading. It has English, then Japanese, then Romanji, so it is easy to translate. I might get a hard copy for my granddaughter, who is bilingual. Nice story too.
