Provides excerpts from the author's personal watercolor sketchbooks as well as hundreds of anecdotal tips and techniques for overcoming the challenges of journaling on the road, from rain and insects to sketching the public without being noticed. Original.
"I have traveled to several countries as a volunteer with World Medical Missions, Inc. On these missions, I find myself a reluctant ambassador of sorts. I go to relieve some pain and suffering, but painting in public places opens additional doors to friendly discourse and better understanding. I believe my desire to paint pictures of their country often breaks down relational barriers." "I can guarantee that I learned far more about this piazza from painting it than if I had just taken a photograph. Good thing I was able to do both! Photo references are not as good as painting on site, but if [there is not] time to paint while on location, a snapshot is the way to go. The important thing is to keep painting and practice as often as [one] can. Learning is what art is all about."商品の説明をすべて表示する
In between the demonstrations are notes and illustrations on many areas of interest to beginning painters. Some topics are what to pack, what format to use, choosing a point of view, how to do covers and title pages, and how to handle unfriendly (or what seem to be unfriendly) subjects.
This is a very good book for anyone who wants to illustrate a journal of a trip, or of many trips. It assumes some facility with drawing and painting, but even for the beginner (like me) it's inspiring and informative.
