A.J. Styles vs. Chris Jericho - The third match in their trilogy over the previous month they were evenly matched in the early moments before Jericho was able to get the advantage with the match briefly going to the outside & going aerial various times including catching & countering A.J. in mid-air on more than one occasion while Styles had his own counters to some of Jericho's trademark offense along with delivering some unique ones of his own as they continued to trade momentum throughout the contest with more innovative counters & submission attempts in a really good competitive match.
Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar - The winner of this match would go on to face Triple H for the WWE Championship in the main event at WrestleMania. Brock knew he was the odd man out so he took the fight to both men right at the start with one man being taken to "Suplex City" in the opening minute & both opponents continuing to be suplexed multiple times including catching one in mid-air at one point to deliver another one while Dean Ambrose continue to show how much of a lunatic he was by continuing to taunt & attack Brock in different ways only to get the fight taken to him & begging for more while all three men would take advantage of an opening whenever the situation occurred with two opponents so focused on fighting each other that they would temporarily forget about the third man as this match went on with various highlights such as Reigns & Ambrose resorting to their old days of The Shield to take out Brock more than once only for them to immediately turn on each other using whatever they could get their hands on to beat on each other as both men showed how well they knew each other by having counters & avoiding the other's offense in a match that was nothing short of physical.
Ladder Match: Intercontinental Champion Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Sin Cara vs. Zack Ryder vs. Stardust vs. The Miz - You knew the direction this match was going when multiple bodies were going to the outside to get ladders in the opening minute that had multiple moments such as the multiple bodies falling & pushed off the ladder, Stardust's tribute to "a common man" in more ways than one, men flying around off the top or over the top or on the outside of the ring in various ways, one man a falling off the ladder onto the top rope then springboarding off it to the outside, a superkick party, one man dropping an elbow like a "savage", more than one body going through a scaffold ladder on the outside, and a WrestleMania moment that was four years overdue in the type of "car crash" that you would expect from this type of match.
Womens Championship Match: Divas Champion Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks vs. Becky Lynch - Just a couple of notes here but Lita earlier in the night revealed that the championship & term "Divas" would be retired with the winner of this match becoming the new Womens Champion, Charlotte's ring robe as a tribute to her father resembling his robe from his WrestleMania 24 retirement match, and Sasha's ring gear was a tribute to Eddie Guerrero while her cousin Snoop Dogg performed her entrance. One woman was the odd one out right away only for it to immediately show that it's every woman for herself as there were times where it was one on one & all three women interacting with each other as each women displayed their individual style of offense including unique offense I don't recall seeing from them previously or moves that were pages right out of some Hall Of Famer's playbook along with various sequences between two women only for the third participant to take advantage or even one move taking about both opponents at once plus each woman displaying their submission tactics to going aerial on more than one occasion while Ric on the outside making his presence known as some times resulting in this being definitely the best womens/divas match at Mania in a decade (Trish Stratus vs. Mickie James at 22).
Hell In The Cell Match: Undertaker vs. Shane McMahon - It should be noted that this was Taker's third Cell match at Mania while Shane has a record of 2-0 at this event but his first match in 7 years. Taker started out dominate using his trademark offense & the cell to his advantage continuing to take advantage of the environment while Shane would use the same tactics even surprising Taker using one of his signature moves against him & even having counters into his own moves as this match started to get more physical to the point where the cell couldn't contain the match anymore with both men continuing to use whatever they could & sacrificing themselves just to hurt the other guy as this wasn't as physical or violent as other recent Cell matches but Shane did what he always has done & give it everything he had leaving us with a memorable moment.
Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens - A rivalry that goes back over a decade through different names & promotions with this being their first WWE PPV singles match. Both started trading fist right from the start with both men being very aggressive both in the ring & outside using the environment around them to their advantage as they traded momentum with impactful moves including delivering the same move back to back & having counters for their opponents signature offense as it literally came down to one man being able to catch the other in a match that J.B.L. on commentary said, "someone call the sheriff, they just stole the show!"
Extreme Rules Match: WWE Champion Roman Reigns vs. A.J. Styles - Both men started feeling each other out with Roman having the power advantage while Styles had superior speed as the action couldn't be contained in the ring going throughout the crowd even to an area of the arena that we rarely see action at with all areas of ringside coming into play multiple times before settling back in the ring with both men having counters to the other's signature offense such as catching their opponent's in mid-air while also singling out different areas of the body in unique ways along with utilizing weapons & their alliances the best way possible in what was a hell of an awesome main event brawl.
Money In The Bank Ladder Match: Dean Ambrose vs. Sami Zayn vs. Cesaro vs. Kevin Owens vs. Chris Jericho vs. Alberto Del Rio - This match started off as a 6 way brawl between everyone & didn't stop with various highlights such as the ladder being used either was a weapon including one man trapped inside it, an "uppercut party only" to be topped by another party of an offensive move, various signature offense performed on the ladder, one giant swing ending badly for the opponent, and eventually all six men fighting on ladders at the same time for the case in what was a great ladder match full of crazy & hard bumps.
Money In The Bank
WWE Champion Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins - Roman was able to keep showing up Seth with his superior power early on only for Seth to come at Roman with his superior speed with Roman being able to keep using his momentum against him or stopping it dead in it's tracks as he kept getting more & more physical to the point where the referee had to get physical himself to separate the two as they continued to trade momentum Roman continuing to use his power & other tactics including a version of the powerbomb I haven't previously seen while Seth had the speed & agility with aerial maneuvers coming off or over the top rope while both continued to avoid & counter the other's signature offense in a hard hitting bout...only for another man's earlier prediction on what would happen afterwords to be "cashed in."
Money In The Bank
Sasha Banks & Bailey vs. Charlotte & Dana Brooke - NXT superstar Bailey made her main roster debut as Sasha's mystery partner with Charlotte & Dana attempting to get the advantage before the match taking it to the outside only for Sasha & Bailey to come back with some aerial moves from different positions as both teams traded momentum with one team using whatever tactics possible to constantly keeping her opponent in their half of the ring away from her partner while the other team just kept bringing the fight overcoming each time their momentum was stopped in a fun opening match.
WWE Champion Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins - A couple of notes here in that these three men within the last 10 mins. of the previous PPV all held the WWE Championship, they were the members of The Shield, this was the last time all three men would face off against each other for the WWE Championship with Roman & Seth going to RAW while Ambrose was drafted to SmackDown, and both authority figures from the shows (Stephanie McMahon & Mick Foley for RAW while Shane McMahon & Daniel Bryan represented SmackDown) were at ringside along with the rosters watching in their own separate locker rooms due to the importance of where the title would be after this match. This match had some highlights such as one person being the odd man out with one opponent going straight after him at the start only for the third opponent to keep feeding him to his other opponent to the point that they kept focusing on him whenever he was in the ring, various times when two men were so concentrated on each other that it allowed the third man to take them both out, the action going all around ringside with various weapons coming into play, sequences of one big move hit after another, and different "deja vu" moments from their past together in nothing short of one hell of a main event match.
John Cena vs. A.J. Styles - Both men were evenly matched as Styles was able to score with a simple offensive maneuver only for Cena to response with a punch to the mouth as both men continued to trade big maneuvers against each other from inside the ring & apron to having counters for each other's signature moves while executing their own including some unique combinations that are rarely seen from each other as they continued to go back & forth executing submissions & aerial offense from the top rope & springboard positions in what was a highly competitive contest from bell to bell with neither man having a distinct advantage for a long period of time.
WWE Universal Championship Match: Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins - A couple of notes here in that RAW Commissioner Stephanie McMahon & General Manager Mick Foley were at ringside while this match could only be won by pinfall or submission with the crowd making it clear how they felt about the physical appearance of the new championship. Balor came into this match as "The Demon King" as he was able to deliver an impactful maneuver launching Seth into the corner & go aerial while Seth took the match to the outside utilizing the environment to his advantage only for Balor to do the same as the action as the action returned to the ring as both men targeted different areas of the body with various combinations & submissions utilized along with maneuvers not seen by them in WWE in an encounter so physical that one man didn't walk out unscathed.
Smackdown Womens Championship/Elimination Match: Becky Lynch vs. Nikki Bella vs. Naomi vs. Natalya vs. Alexa Bliss vs. Carmella - You knew the direction this match was going when all the women starting fighting each other right at the bell & continued that way throughout the match with various highlights such as one woman playing smart by observing & picking her shots, the constant interaction between two heated rivals, one diva showcasing the look & personality of a popular comic book character, the women taking many high risk moves from either off the turnbuckles or a springboard, sequences of one big move another, different submissions, and moments of two opponents either taking or being taken out at one time by another in a strong match under the conditions to determine the champion.
Cesaro vs. Sheamus - The last match in their "Best Of Seven Series" with each man tied at 3-3 with Sheamus heavily focusing on the back that he injured earlier in the series from various types backbreakers to different strikes & dropping weight directly to that area of the body while Cesaro focused on a more diverse style relying on his trademark uppercuts to executing offense from different positions in the ring from a springboard corkscrew to the top rope including a move never seen from him before straight out of "San Diego" & one move that was he was able to walk after the scary landing as they continued to trade momentum back & forth from counters & reversals to submissions to their signature finishers with the action being unable to be contained inside the ring as both men literally beat each other into exhaustion in what was a very physical match & definitely saved the best match for last in this series with the only negativity about it being the final result depending on how you want to look at it.
Clash Of Champions
Intercontinental Champion The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler - Miz's title vs. Dolph's career as Dolph started off fast paced constantly catching Miz off guard before Miz was able to slow down the pace & keep Dolph grounded constantly stopping his momentum while continuing to send a message to Daniel Bryan in the process as they traded momentum with different counters & combinations as Miz focused heavily on an area of the body & taking advantage of whatever shortcuts & distractions possible while Dolph pulled out any huge move possible including some out of another superstar's playbook & being aware of where he was in the ring at all times resulting in a competitive match that has should have main evented the PPV.
Hell In A Cell Match: Raw Womens Champion Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte - Both women had special entrances while it was noted that Sasha was in her hometown of Boston while Charlotte came into this match with a PPV undefeated streak of 14-0. This match literally started with a bang as one woman attacked her opponent during the introductions with the cell almost lowering down on her before before brawling through the crowd back around ringside with one woman's move being so impactful that her opponent was almost unable to continue before getting off the stretcher to officially start the match as Charlotte heavily focused on an injured area of the body through various impactful offense as both women used different tactics from submissions to using other weapons into the match to use in unique ways against their opponent including some that just refused to give & be broken while utilizing the cell & other areas of the ring including Sasha at one point channeling not only her hero in Eddie Guerrero but also a famous superhero at one point in a match that was just not just physical but also history in the making.
Hell In A Cell
If you already get past the usual issues when it comes to each edition of this yearly set (nothing for the last two months of the year) then this was a solid lineup of matches throughout the year but I personally would have substituted some of the selections (Zayn vs. Owens from Payback, Reigns vs. Rollins from Money In The Bank, Women's tag match from Battleground) with others (Asylum Match with Ambrose vs. Jericho from Extreme Rules, Zayn vs. Owens from Battleground, New Day vs. Wyatts from Battleground, Styles vs. Ambrose from Backlash, Perkins vs. Kendrick from Clash Of Champions, Styles vs. Ambrose vs. Cena from No Mercy) but overall this was a solid collection of matches from events throughout the year.
