The title Virtuosi is certainly an apt one for these two technically impeccable players. The idea behind this set is to give a sympathetic jazz-minded setting to some classical compositions that would prove good candidates for treatment. The programme starts with a duet arrangement of the opening movement from Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin which has not only perfect phrasing co-ordination but a beautiful blend of timbre and dynamic between the two instruments: a not inconsiderable feat. Such levels of performance may seem ho-hum-ish to the inattentive, but there is so much to what these two do here that close listening rewards with constant little delights and surprises through a programme which includes arrangements of Barber (no--not the dreaded adagio), Rachmaninov, Gershwin, Brahms, Delibes and Scarlatti. Burton has a very long track record in international music circles, Ozone less so, but the Japanese pianist, who has made some brilliant records as a leader, is fully partner to Burton throughout, being able to lead or follow at a moment's notice. An erudite CD that is also a musical treat, whether you know the originals or not. --Keith Shadwick
2. Trust me, I have almost every Makoto album as well as Gary's Whiz Kid Era albums; this current stuff is just... canned material.
