A splendid selection of arias by Handel (and a couple of others). Clayton has a pleasant voice, but it repeatedly sounds insecure - as if at any moment he could drift out of tune. This significantly weakened the pleasure I would otherwise have derived from this disc. (Try Mark Padmore for greater security in a similar recital.)
This aria, which appears towards the end of the c.d. is one of my favourites. I bought the c.d. after reading Claire Seymour's excellent review for "Opera Today", thinking I was in for a real treat, but was somewhat disappointed. I suspect that others who are much more knowledgeable about Handel will probably disagree. Seymour praises Clayton's excellent diction but there are times when his voice is overwhelmed by the music. I first heard "Semele" in the televised version with John Mark Ainsley and much prefer his voice. The thing I found most off-putting was the sound quality of this whole c.d. which was rather deadened - it seemed to lack vitality.

Purchased in misplaced enthusiasm after reading newspaper review. Nothing wrong with the performance or quality of disc but a rather monotonous selection.
