Under Construction CD The Goldmind, Inc., 7559-62813-2, 2002, 14 Track
Amazon
(Caroline Butler, Amazon.co.uk)

So, the album starts out with an introduction of Missy explaining what "Under Construction" is about and how it reflects to the death of Aaliyah.
1. Go To the Floor (8/10) - The beat is energetic, and of course, the lyrics easily flow into this Timbaland-produced beat.
2. Bring the Pain (9/10) - A beat sampled from Method Man's song, it even makes the song more interesting to hear when Method Man is a collaborator. But Missy's singing vocals are simple, and amazing to hear, and raps at the end to wrap up the song.
3. Gossip Folks (10/10) - The chorus, as well as the verses makes the song well interesting. The overall message is about Missy's fed-up ways towards the gossip she faces, and she takes them down.
4. Work It (8.5/10) - One of the good songs on this album, although, I still think that the edited version would be way more appropriate than this version. However, it doesn't stop the fact that Missy's rapping is awesome in this song.
5. Back In the Day (9.5/10) - Tweet brings her sweet and sultry vocals in each end of the chorus while Jay-Z starts out the rap and Missy sings. What could be better?
6. Funky Fresh Dressed (10/10) - While I think that Missy's lyrics were a bit weak in this song, Ms. Jade saved this song at the end with the Paul Revere sample.
7. Pussycat (9/10) - For this song, it's sexual. But at least it's safe, and it doesn't go overboard. Tweet once again brings her vocals to the song.
8. Nothing Out The For Me (9.5/10) - Basically, the song is Beyonce leading the song, Missy doesn't exactly rap, mainly in the end where Beyonce and Missy lead the song together. Beyonce takes the song to a whole new level.
9. Slide (10/10) - A definite highlight to the album. One of the most interesting songs that can get you out of your seat and on to the floor dancing.
10. Play That Beat (10/10) - A good song that Missy brings her singing vocals in.
11. Ain't That Funny (10/10) - Another song Missy brings her singing in, it's a good song.
12. Hot (10/10) - The second highlight of the album where Missy brings back her rapping styles with a sick beat.
13. Can You Hear Me? (8.5/10) - The best is saved for last as Missy, Tweet and TLC all sing in this song to sing to the loved ones lost: Aaliyah and Left Eye. The only thing is, you don't exactly hear T-Boz as Chilli takes over.
14. Work It (Remix) (9/10) - 50 Cent pitches in with his rapping chops, but still the song is the same like #4.
Overall, this is a very amazing album created, it's worth a buy.
What makes UNDER CONSTRUCTION so good first of all is the fact that Missy isn't afraid to tell things the way that they are. She doesn't try to hold back language-wise or sexuality-wise. When Missy has something to say, she says it, which makes her both edgy and both honest. Why sugar coat the truth? Missy tells what she is feeling (even if it grows quite explicit at times) and that is what music is about isn't it? Who wants to hear lies? Back to the point...
UNDER CONSTRUCTION is arguably Missy's best album (...SO ADDICTIVE is a close as well). It features so many unique ideas and sounds and shows Missy exploring different facets of her talents. While most will say that "Work It", her Grammy winning performance, is the highlight, I think it is her incredible "Gossip Folks" feat. Ludacris that steals the show. Yet, one can't forget the somewhat nasty, but lovable "P***ycat" where Missy sings so lovely (as she always does). It isn't common that you can find a rapper who could've made it as a singer, which I think Missy could've easily done.
"Nothing There For Me", which features Beyonce Knowles is another hit. Beyonce sings angelically and Missy does her thing as usual. There is really no need to point out anymore individual songs or performances on this CD because they are all good. The guest performance by Jay-Z on this album is much better than it is on her 2003 follow-up THIS IS NOT A TEST ("Wake Up"). This is a great CD that deserves every bit of hype and recognition that it received when it first came out and still received. I hear "Work It" being played all the time now and it has been 3 years since the release of this great title, which will surely go down in music history (or at least hip-hop history!). 5 stars, easily.
But this album is a throwback in a way: Work It, Gossip Folks and Funky Fresh Dressed (3rd and final single) were all old-school based, as far as the videos.
All which made solid songs. Adding to the mix was Nothin' Out There For Me, Pussycat (my FAVORITE song here, and favorite EVER by her), Back In The Day, Ain't It Funny, Bring The Pain Feat. Method Man!, Play That Beat and Work It (Remix). The only missteps were Slide and the average Can You Hear Me, which has meaning but falls flat.
If you love Missy Elliot, PLEASE add this to YOUR collection. (:
Cover Art: B- (was the FIRST time I saw her with excess weight OFF!)
Inside Art: B (nice to see her the way she's always wanted to be; comfortable with herself)
Songwriting: C+ (spotty but good sometimes)
Vocals: C- (love when she sings)
Vocal Emotion: F+
Vocal Acrobatics: D-
Production: B-
Length: A+
4.25 stars.
On that note, I really do enjoy Under Construction. I think that there is a lot more chit chat on this one, and not minding the tributes, wish that every song didn't start off as "another Missy Elliott exclusive" - it's a little much. Yet, the beats, the words, they get trapped in your head and it's a good thing. I can't wait to "discover" each new track and look always forward to all of the future releases.
