One of my favourite CD's; some of the most wonderful music on earth and the performance is exquisite. I fancy Bach's trio sonatas were originally written as organ solos and having heard them that way I can only say how thankful I am for these transcriptions. I also have the sonatas played on guitar and harpsichord, that is pleasant but this album by London Baroque is so stunning. I know I'll never tire of it and I play it often.
My first acquaintance with J.S. Bach's Six Trio Sonatas (BWV 525-530) was a vinyl recording by E. Power Biggs, from among his many recordings of Bach on the Flentrop organ at Harvard. I enjoyed the music so much I added his recording of the same works on pedal harpsichord. (Only the pedal harpsichord recording has been re-released on CD --
Bach: The Six Trio Sonatas
-- at this writing, but I keep hoping for the first recording ... ) My point is that I am a long-time fan of these works.
This recording is utterly delightful. The trio voices of the two violins and viol de gamba dance wonderfully with one another, and the harpsichord continuo fills nicely, complimenting but never obscurring the lines of melody and countermelody. The tempos are (to me) perfect; the fast movements are lively but never hurried, the slower movements a smooth and sweet but never drag.
For fans of Bach, this is a great addition to the collection. For those who are, be careful ... you might become one after this. Seriously.
