彼らの初期の名盤といえば"Odessa"とこのアルバム。このアルバムに収録されている「How Can You Mend A Broken Heart」は彼らの初めての全米No.1ヒットでもあり、今聴いても素晴らしい名曲。個人的には彼らの曲の中でもベストの1曲。
"Odessa"はバリエイションに富んだアルバムですが、一方こちらは全編ほぼ美しいバラード曲で彼らのビビッドで魅力的な曲が目白押し。とてもいいアルバムです。

このレビューは2022年11月23日に再発された日本盤CDについてのものです。

LPは1971年9月に米で発売、例のごとく日本では遅れに遅れ翌年の1月にやっと発売された。初来日も決まって話題になり、そこそこヒットしたが、このアルバムの前後に発売された日本独自の編集盤『イン・ザ・モーニング』や『マイ・ワールド』に比べると小さいもので、当時のビー・ジーズのオリジナル・アルバムはあまり売れていない。

日本だけではないが、彼らのアルバムはシングルがヒットしたか否かで売れ行きが左右される。このアルバムには全米１位の「傷心の日々」が含まれているが、なんと日本ではB面だった。なぜB面だったのか、新しくなった解説の中でも触れられており、目から鱗が落ちたような気がした。さらに、解説の中では初来日のことも記載されていて、行きたくて仕方がなかったけど叶わなかった高一の頃の自分を思い出した（東京や大阪の人たちがうらやましかった）。

私が一番好きな「ワーテルローに戻ろう」に代表されるように、サウンドは全体的に分厚いストリングスに覆われていて荘厳である。しかし、一聴しただけではこのアルバムの良さはわからない。
ソウルシンガーバリーの「イスラエル」は何とも黒っぽく盛り上がり方が凄い。ビー・ジーズに好意的でない今は亡き親友が、映画みたいだと珍しく賛辞していた。
「ボクはライオン」の高音のシャウトは、当時の解説にモーリスとあったので信じていたが、ロビンが正解と分かったのはかなり後だ。今回の解説に『ロビンの血を吐くようなソウルフルなシャウトを聴くと、彼らがよく誤解されるように「耳当たりの良い音楽」を志向していたのではないことがわかる』とあるが、至言だと思う。

グループとしては、落ち着きを見せていた時期と記憶する。ハーモニーは相変わらず絶品で有る。「想い出」、「ワーテルローへ戻ろう」は特筆すべき名曲であろう。30cmLP(英国盤)を手に入れた時は感激し、CDもポリドール・スーパーも所有しているが、音質のみならずジャケットも今となっては、貴重この上無い。

音質がよくありません。
帯にはSHM-CDの表記はどこにもなく、デジタルリマスタリングはされてないみたいです。
内容は満足のいくものでしたが、いい音で聴きたかったので残念です。

この、何とも言えない憂いと哀愁を含んだ曲が欲しくて買いました。いろんな歌手が唄ってます。でもBee Geesの唄はやや荒削りでおもわずへただと思いましたが、曲そのものの出来から良しとしましょう。その他も佳曲ばかりです。

このアルバムからでしょうかね
しばらく、１年１作として
世界ツアーに出るようになったのは
音楽的にもビージーズはギブ３兄弟でガッツリやるんだ的なものが感じられて
６０年代後半のなんちゃってグループ・サウンドとは決別し
エンターティナー性も意識しつつ打って出たように思います
ただ、日本では、やっぱり「メロディーフェアー」のビージーズで
レコード・セールス上、オリジナル・アルバムが出る間は
過去のベスト・アルバムばかり売られてましたから
結果的に新しいファンを獲得するという点ではマイナスだったんじゃないかと思っています
１曲１曲を語るより、アルバム全体として評価してあげたい時代に突入ってとこでしょうか

ビージーズ中期の「中興の祖」的な見方をされることの多いアルバムです。ジャケットからそう思うのかもしれませんが、英国情緒あふれるサウンドにアイドルからの脱皮を果たした彼らの自信が伺えます。

初期ビー・ジーズの傑作。オデッサに続くトータルアルバムで楽曲も素晴らしく捨て曲なし。サウンドのほうもドラマーが正式メンバーになり４人のバンド編成となりサウンド面もアップ。故モーリスも歌〔リードボーカル１曲あり〕とベースとメロトロン演奏と大活躍でこのアルバムで単なるPOPグループではないことを証明している。

Just may be my favorite Bee Gees album. Had it on LP and 8-Track way on way back when. The tape broke, the LP was loaned out and never came back. So glad to have it back in my collection on CD now.
How Can You Mend a Broken Heart? One of their most beautiful ballads, for sure. And one of their most covered, justifiably so. Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself is another longtime favorite. The title song, Trafalgar, is one of the band's most magnificent moments. And then there's the reason I initially bought the LP all those years ago: Lion in Winter. I've loved that track from the first time I heard it back in 1971. Tremendous. Unmatched in their catalog. Four minutes of Bee Gees bliss. Back in the day, I had hoped that Elvis (who was a genuine lion in winter himself) would cover it and build an album of personal reminiscence around it. Oh, what an album that would have been. Unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be. As for the Bee Gees Trafalgar, four glowing stars and very highly recommended to fans of great '70s popular music.

Many consider this to be the actual follow up to the epic "Odessa" album released a couple of years before, Robin had left the band after it's release to start a solo career and Barry & Maurice released "Cucumber Castle" in 1970 & later that year "2 Years On" with Robin back in the fold. Both of those albums had great songs but were kind of a transition into this album. The songs on Trafalgar seem to be somewhat personal and deeply heart wrenching at times. Barry's and Robin's vocals on songs like "Israel" & "Lion In Winter" are raw and from the "gut". It's almost like all the years of frustration they had been feeling was finally able to be released in this album.

It begins with the #1 hit, "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart", which is a song that has been covered nearly 500 times. It's truly one of the most gorgeous songs Barry ever wrote and a great way to start of this album. Next, you have the afore mentioned "Israel" and then one of my personal favorite songs on the entire album, "The Greatest Man In The World". Barry's vocals transition from the raw, unbridled emotion of "Israel" to the more loving tones of this song and the harmonies are absolutely stunning. This album features Maurice taking more of a roll as he wrote both the next song "It's Just The Way" & the title track "Trafalgar" and co-wrote several other songs. He also plays on multiple instruments showing the tremendous talent that all 3 brothers possessed.

Music was changing at this time and many new acts were on the horizon, Earth, Wind and Fire had just formed & Stevie Wonder & Curtis Mayfield were both entering the most creative phases of their incredible careers, all 3 would tear up the 1970's in a way few had ever seen. Hard rock had come on the scene with bands like Led Zeppelin & Black Sabbath and Pink Floyd was in the midst of their ascendence on the scene with the release of "Meddle" which was a pre-cursor to the epic they'd release a year later, "Dark Side Of The Moon". You can hear some of the changes and experimentation in this album as the Bee Gees were finding their niche and preparing themselves for the tremendous successes yet before them and the 2nd phase of what was/is a truly Hall Of Fame worthy career and placing them alongside their British contemporaries as one of the greatest bands/groups of all time.

This album is yet another example of their incredible songwriting and vocal harmonies and those are the two things that would carry them on through this transition period and lift them on into the incredible greatness of the 2nd phase of their career.
