Second, there is a bit of eclecticism, but I think that's one of the strong points of the album. For example, "Country Girl" is absolutely gorgeous, but not Matthew's regular sound. And the chords on "Hello," "Finally," and "Carol" just drift into the summer evening. They're inspired and evoke that longing, yearning quality so present in Sweet's best work. Are the lyrics or concepts behind the songs always the strongest? No, I don't think "Carol" stands up to anything on Girlfriend or 100% fun. But it's no "Big Cats of Shamabala," either.
Listen to Sweet's earlier work, like the entire Girlfriend album, and you'll notice his strength is in variety. Don't think so? Listen to "I thought you knew me" back-to-back with "Girlfriend" then "Your Sweet Voice" then "Don't Go" then "Does SHe Talk"... and THEN tell me that. Or, vice versa, listen to the monotone mess of Modern Art (Sorry, Matthew!) and tell me that. Tomorrow Forever has a degree of variety much closer to the Girlfriend album. More than that, it has several VERY catchy "favorites." While I did like Sunshine Lies, it was really about half the songs that I liked, not the WHOLE album. Living Things had some favorites, but the album as a whole wasn't doing it for me. Modern Art...? Nah. I'm a huge fan of 100% Fun, Girlfriend, Kimi Ga Suki, and Altered Beast. Tomorrow Forever isn't as dark as Altered Beast, of course. But it is focused, dreamy, and hopeful. I feel like Matthew found a good place in making this record. Any fan of his larger body of work is going to adore this latest -- and appreciate the collaborations and experimentations that went into the album.
Currently listening to "End is Near" off of Tomorrow Forever and just love it!
Crunchy guitars on "Bittersweet" -- love it!
Swooning chords that open "You Knew Me" -- love it!
Perfect vocal sound harmonized with instruments on "You Knew Me" -- love it!
I won't list every song, but the truth is I am loving this album and I can tell it's the kind of feeling that's going to grow. I'm going to get more fond of many of these songs and the album as a whole with each listen. I have the chance to see Matthew Sweet in concert this summer, and this album convinced me to grab some tickets.
Those who love the Girlfriend era will really enjoy it.
The first few tracks are great and my favorite is "Music for Love".
It may take a few listens to sink in, try it!
Matthew also plays a good live show too, check it out.
