If you, your kids, and/or parents, friends, relatives, etc, enjoy clean children's fantasy, Narnia for instance, you'll be right at home with this book. When originally written, this hadn't as yet been considered as part of the trilogy it would eventually become. This is complete and can stand on its own. Having said that, the books get even better than this excellent offering should you choose to continue. It's not hard to fall in love with the king's family, his wizard Artemas, and the Jordan family. The use of magic is appropriate to the story, and the whole concept of the Timedoor is fascinating, and how it can only connect the worlds at certain times. With adventures, escapes, magic and magical creatures from a Tolkien influenced environment, and great storytelling and characterization, this is a delightful children's read for the whole family, suitable for third graders on up.
One note: There were times I would forget that the kids were three years apart in age, and I feel that some of Molly's actions would have been more indicative of a typical nine-year old than her given age of eight. A two year difference would have also made more sense to me concerning Christopher and Molly's relationship with each other as well. That small bit of nitpicking was not enough to throw me out of the story or effect my rating. Highly recommended!
