著者について

Many have set about in life to tell stories that amaze others. Patrick Gallagher had no such ambition. However, some stories grip us by the collar and demand they be told to the world, and this is what Patrick has been challenged to do. He has been a jack of all trades, master of one, the one being a U.S. Customs Broker and logistics specialist. But over a course of a lifetime Patrick has worked as a farm laborer, forest fire fighter, process server, retail store manager, preacher, warehouseman and dishwasher. However, founding and managing a business in international logistics was the career he loved. Now retired, Patrick and his wife enjoy their four children and twelve grandchildren, and their home at the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Denver, Colorado.

5つ星のうち3.0 Interesting Story, but Could be Better Told
2020年7月11日にアメリカ合衆国でレビュー済み
A good, true crime book is often difficult to put down. Even when you ultimately know what happens, a well- written crime book reads in such a compelling, creative way that you want to continue turning the pages, anxious to uncover more twists and turns leading up to the actual act of crime itself.

This book, Til Death Do Us, is about a true crime event that happened many decades ago, involving a bizarre, demented woman, her many love interests, and her skill at deception. It is certainly a compelling story and I would bet when the trial was taking place, it was all the talk in western Idaho and eastern Oregon, where most of the action happened and where the trial was held. It does get you thinking about the people involved, their motives, their naiveté, and how they got away with what they did, for so long. It’s also an interesting to look back at what was considered an innocent era and imagine how relatively easy it would have been to commit various unethical and even criminal acts and get away with them.

Like I said, the story is interesting. But where this book misses the mark is with the writing. It doesn’t give you a feeling of suspenseful anticipation and you don’t necessarily want to continue reading to find out more. There are also issues with the writing itself, which jumps around, is inconsistent, and even uses questionable grammar at times. For example, often the book uses past and present- tense verbs when describing an event. It should have used past tense all the way through.

One of the things I did like about the book is its inclusion of pictures. It’s always nice when you can place a face with a name and while this might seem like an obvious addition to any true crime book, far too many of them have no pictures at all. The addition of actual letters written back and forth between the different people is also interesting. You read these letters, which are often extremely heart- felt and seem genuine and true, and yet you know from what happens that the words written by the woman are completely deceptive. You wonder what could be going through an individual’s mind that would possesses them to engage in such extreme, cruel deception.

I love a good true crime book. Til Death Do Us, however, is an average read at best. The story is a compelling one, but the writing doesn’t quite do it justice. Overall, however, with the inclusion of pictures and other factors, it seems good enough to earn an average rating overall.
