The extraordinary power and intensity of Tarot de Paris reflects the energy and inspiration of its creator, J. Philip Thomas, over a period of 20 years. The result is a deck of 78 breathtaking images incorporating a dazzling array of classic and contemporary art and architecture from what is arguably the world's most beautiful city. The 22 Major Arcana cards portray the stages of the Fool's journey, and the four suits of the Minor Arcana are expressed as their elements of Fire, Air, Water and Matter. With a fully illustrated book detailing each card and offer a number of new readings devised just for this set, along with a stunning silk cloth for laying out the cards, Tarot de Paris is a revelatory experience.
Many years ago I traded my beloved Sacred Dakini Cards for a copy of T de Paris but after a few weeks my friend demanded we switch them back again. Because T de Paris is definitely a T of Ascension. And it has no competition. The eastern concepts and intelligence in the Dakini O then called the Tantric Dakini had a bright energy also but derived out of the more Tibetan kind of clarity. The high creative and artistic quality of these few older decks still sets them apart from therapeutic self-help type cards and that both those decks share a quality of clarity, a definite sense of the highest or best self which sticks to the consciousness and lingers after even a 30 minute long musing with all the images.
Maybe it is a discernment that lifts away from sentimentality.

But it is not the same as contemplating them in person.
Also a lot of the pictures look like the author cut and pasted photos of Parisian artifacts onto a Photoshop-generated background, rather than a comprensive illustration of what the arcana is supposed to look like.
And in case anyone's curious, I still don't know why Paris figures so prominently in my dreams after seeing this deck. But it is a nice addition to my Tarot collection. I don't regret purchasing it.
I like my old deck, but it was slightly hard to use though, without marring the finish. Images are beautiful and classic sculpture adorning the City of Paris.
A lovely deck.
