Sound of Silence(2003)
Thousands Of Winters Of Flames(2005)
SAMURAI METAL Vol.1(2005)
This great album kicks off with the mother of all coming-out-party songs, "Awakening." Before you're three minutes into this speed assault, you're treated with a solo. It has that same overpowering affect that "Father Time" (Stratovarius) does: both songs are so glorious, so high - it's almost too good to be true.
"End This Misery" was one of my two first Balflare songs (along with "The Dunes" from Sleeping Hollow), and it strikes me as the most radio friendly. It's a fast song, but not as fast as "Awakening." A perfect comparison would be "Will the Sun Rise?", also by Stratovarius. Hmm... so far this album is sounding a lot like Episode...
"Outbreak" is also Stratovarius-esque in its lyrical themes. It is the "Why do we fight? Why can't we get along? Why do we hurt our world? Let's get our act together," theme that Stratovarius perfected with songs like "Paradise," "Mother Gaia," and "Anthem of the World." If you like any of these songs, you've got to hear Balflare.
If you liked the fast songs, you have more of those in the form of "Burning Wild" and "End of Time." If you liked the up-tempo songs, you will enjoy "A False Charge," "Storm Load," and "Black Raven." The remaining two songs are ballads: "Toward Fall" and "Reaching For the Sky."
This is a fantastic album. It shows the band seeking variety in pace and not pummeling us with non-stop fast songs. (I guess that's what happens when DragonForce is one of your influences.) The up-tempo songs make this album so fun to come back to again and again. Balflare would mature further on their next album (and my favorite), Sleeping Hollow, as it has the mid-tempo "Tormentor" and the band's only epic to date, "The Eye of Pharaoh." I can't recommend this band enough to fans of any of the Finnish melodic metal bands, or even many of the melodic/power metal bands worldwide.
