To my mind, this is the best recording of Copland's great third symphony. All too often, it sounds fragmented and somewhat incoherent. But trust Yoel Levi always to find the melodic line and reveal the intention of Copland. There is both beauty and drama and the hushed transition to the fourth movement and the famous 'Fanfare of the Common Man' has rarely has as magical an effect as it does in the hands of Levi and his orchestra. The Atlanta Symphony plays gorgeously throughout, with brightly singing American strings, bold brass and some really fine woodwinds. Even if the filler - the Music for the Theatre - is not as substantial as the symphony, it is fine and entertaining music. Highly recommended!
4.0Very Nice, Although Not As Superior to Bernstein/New York Philharmonic As I Thought

After reading so many reviews that this is superior to the Bernstein New York Philharmonic DG recording, I maybe expected too much. Yes, Levi's tempi are faster in places, and I like the variety, but I can't say it's better--just an interesting different. Probably the biggest difference is orchestral balance. The Bernstein is brassy and close, like you're on stage with the orchestra. The Levi Atlanta is smoother as though you are in a prime seat in the hall. I happen to prefer the former for Copland's 3rd. Also, the Atlanta upper strings don't quite have of the sparkle of the NYP.
That said, this is a wonderful and worthy recording for ones library and I'm glad I got it. The Music for the Theater is also very nicely interpreted.
One of my favorite pieces of music since I was about nine years old. I grew-up listening to the vinyl recording that Copland conducted himself. It isn't on c-d. The fidelity on this recording is wonderful, just like the other reviewers said. I like the pacing better than the Bernstein recording. If you are fond of this symphony go out and buy it for the price of a couple of cups of coffee!
This is a beautiful recording of the Third Symphony and Music for the Theatre. Each recording has it's own personality and I would say that this one is a little stronger than Eije Owe (Minnesota Orchestra). I couldn't believe the price of the CD and the quality of the sound and performance. You can't go wrong with this.
