内容紹介

An aging rock star. A dying fan. A connection.

Raeburn Messiah, the Messiah of Metal, sings for a living. Currently, he's on the downward spiral that unfaithful fame loves so dearly. He feels that he's got it bad, his life is over. That is, until he meets one of his most adoring fans, Gabriel, who has but months to live due to the complications of leukemia.

They are men, both dying slow, painful deaths. But each carries a secret that could save the other. For Raeburn and Gabriel are the suicide flowers, doomed to be trampled, destined to flourish.

I really wanted to like this book. Starting off, it was okay. However, it took forever for the story to get to the point. While it's not a very long book, it still felt drawn out. It felt like the first 60% of the book was spent showcasing how crappy of a person Raeburn was and how Gabriel was going through cancer. I had a hard time having any sympathy for Raeburn and his girlfriend Bunny seemed pretty clueless about staying with him. He had cheated on her numerous times and wasn't a very nice guy - yet she always took him back. Isabelle was a good character, staying by Gabriel's side. I did like her.

The writing in places was poor as well. The constant point of view changes had me confused. Also, there were parts in the narrative where a character "knew" something (like Raeburn's ear being red and swollen after getting his ear pierced in a photo even though the picture didn't show it.) How would Gabriel have known that if the picture didn't show it? It jumps from every character's POV quickly within a matter of sentences so I had to stop and figure out which character was thinking what... and figure out how they'd know a certain detail that was something kept secret.

I like stories about redemption and making friends. It was drawn out and then suddenly, after being crappy, getting into fights, cheating on his girlfriend, Raeburn wakes up and says sorry and that he wants to change. He finally tells Bunny that he loves her even though they had apparently been together for years. And the night before, Bunny was set on leaving him for good, but she takes him back yet again. I guess I'm not as forgiving as Bunny. I'd never put up with someone like that.

This story had potential, and sadly, it fell short of how it could be. I found myself skimming about the last 25% of the book. A rewrite, better editing, and better and steadier character development might make this a much stronger story. .....I really wanted to like it.

5つ星のうち 5.0 Flawless characterization 2014/12/17

The Suicide Flowers was one of those books that I found impossible to put down. The way the author presented each of the main characters was flawless. It is the story of two entirely different men. One a despisable burnout rocker with an ego the size of the Grand Canyon. The other a man dying of a rare form of cancer who happens to be one of his biggest fans. I will not tarnish the plot with unnecessary spoilers. That deserves to be experienced by the reader as it plays out. I will just say that the outcome, though tragic and utterly heartbreaking, The dialogue between them meshed the story wonderfully. It is one of the finest displays of literary work that I have read this year. Being somewhat of a book snob, I do not say this lightly. Conrad's mastery of his craft carries the plot confidently from start to finish. I will be seeking out more from this guy in the near future.

I had no idea where this sorry was headed. But once I started the bok I could not put it down. Such a great story. I did not see how the characters were going to connect but wow when they did it was amazing. Thank you Pets Conrad for an amazing well written book
5つ星のうち 4.0 Gritty But Interesting 2016/7/29

This story is just too gritty for my liking. That being said I plugged along until it hooked me. Then I didn't want to put it down. A very interesting story in it's entirety but just getting there is a chore.
