Kurti and Czako's PowerPDF CD-ROM version of their highly successful Strategic Applications of Named Reactions in Organic Synthesis is in an invaluable tool for specialists and non-specialists in organic chemistry. Like the print edition, this innovative reference work includes 250 full color organic reactions and their strategic use in the synthesis of complex natural and unnatural products. In addition, this advanced CD-ROM integrates a PDF master page linked via color links to the text pages of the book itself. The user is able to go from lecture format to the bookpage and back with the click of a mouse. This accessible and interactive approach makes a wonderful teaching aid for teachers as well as a helpful fully-integrated text and study aid for students and professional readers.
* The first reference work on named reactions to present colored schemes for easier understanding
* 250 frequently used named reactions are presented in a convenient two-page layout with numerous examples
* An opening list of abbreviations includes both structures and chemical names
* Contains more than 10,000 references grouped by seminal papers, reviews, modifications, and theoretical works
* Appendices list reactions in order of discovery, group by contemporary usage, and provide additional study tools
* Extensive index quickly locates information using words found in text and drawings
"This book is outstanding in every way, being polished in presentation, sufficiently detailed in explaining the reactions, and possessing almost encyclopedic indexing and referencing."
-JOURNAL OF CHEMICAL EDUCATION
"It is an impressive modern treatise of many important chemical reactions; it was created with great care, and I congratulate the authors on the outstanding contribution that they are making to the literature of organic chemistry...There are several books on 'named reactions', but this one is already my favorite."
-Erik Sorensen, Princeton University
"It breaks new ground in many ways and sets an admirable standard...Its virtues are so numerous there is a problem in deciding where to begin...a truly fine accomplishment."
- E. J. Corey, Nobel Prize Winner in Organic Chemistry, from the Foreword
"The vast wealth of information so effectively compiled in this colorful text will not only prove to be extraordinarily useful to students and practitioners of the art of chemical synthesis, but will also help facilitate the shaping of its future as it moves forward into ever higher levels of complexity, diversity and efficiency."
- K.C. Nicolaou, from the Introduction
"The book would be invaluable to many chemists, students, professors and industrial chemists. Not only will it serve as a text for name reactions, but it is also a review of important mechanisms and an invaluable reference book...It will definitely have a place in the collection of books that are used regularly by all chemists."
-Madeleine Joullie, University of Pennsylvania
Each reaction gives a description of the reaction, any problems that must be overcome, describes the work-up, and sometimes a bit of the history. It then shows the reaction with different types of reactants, then the mechanism, and then some examples from the literature. The reactions are color coordinated usually with reactants in blue, catalyst in green, and nucleophile in red. This makes the mechanisms easy to follow.
A must have for any organic chemist!
However, the first sentence on page xiv states that “the book uses four colors (black, red, blue, and green)....”. The colors in the book that I received are incorrect: the red is pink and the green is yellow. The yellow is very difficult to read. This is clearly a manufacturing/printing issue. I am exchanging the product in hopes that the new copy has the correct colors.
