Camera operators and video enthusiasts around the world search for the training and information they need to successfully use the Steadicam®, the most versatile tool for moving a motion picture or video camera. Every year, about 500 people in the world are lucky enough to take an intensive training workshop (some of the top workshops are taught by the authors of this book), but these workshops are expensive and sell out as a matter of course: the instructors simply can't keep up with the high demand. As a result, the vast majority of people have no practical way to learn what has become an essential camera operating skill. For the first time, THE STEADICAM® OPERATOR'S HANDBOOK illuminates all aspects of Steadicam operating in one comprehensive package. With over 1300 full-color photos, it's the comprehensive how-to and why-to book for the amateur, semi-pro, and professional.
Written by the premier Steadicam instructors in the world, this book covers everything a cameraman needs to get started using a Steadicam rig and to get better. Both informational and inspirational, THE STEADICAM® OPERATOR'S HANDBOOK moves from the physics and balancing of a Steadicam, through a series of step-by-step line dances and practice shots, to the most personal aspects of filmmaking - how individual operators make creative and practical decisions using this unique camera setup.
The book discusses the wide array of equipment and accessories currently available, and it also illustrates the latest operating techniques and tricks, a variety of strategies for working with others, and the business side of a Steadicam career. Also included are observations and anecdotes - inspirational, funny, instructive, and cautionary - written by a number of other experienced Steadicam operators around the world, including the legendary inventor of the Steadicam himself, Garrett Brown. THE STEADICAM® OPERATOR'S HANDBOOK is both a master class and a master reference for all camera operators and directors who want to move the camera well.
Foreword written by Garrett Brown!

-Dan Kneece, President of the Society of Steadicam Operators
"This is the first book to demystify the operation of the Steadicam"
-Paul Taylor: Steadicam, owner - operator / fifteen year advanced Steadicam workshop lead instructor and developer of Steadicam instructional techniques
"Precision is key when it comes to pulling off a successful Steadicam shot, and it is also the best word to describe what makes The Steadicam Operatorâ?Ts Handbook essential reading. Written by veteran operators Jerry Holway and Laurie Hayball, it is a treasure trove of specific, detailed information regarding the theory and practice of Steadicam operation.Intelligent but not dryly academic, and complete but never overwhelming, The Steadicam Operatorâ?Ts Handbook is a must." - Jim Hemphill, American Cinematographer商品の説明をすべて表示する

Don't buy this ebook for any reason. Not worth the money. Of course I didn't realize how bad the book was until after the Amazon return period. So I bought the printed edition and now have a half-assed electronic "reference" that I will probably never read.
Let me be clear, the printed book is excellent! Stay away form this ebook.
Before buying, I thought the price was a bit high. After buying, I'd easily pay twice the price, or more, 'nuff said.
Do you want to be a writer? Maybe a director? How about a mechanic? There are books out there that will teach you how to do just about anything. Dozens if not hundreds of books devoted to any one of thousands of skills. There is only one book on how to operate a Steadicam. For that reason alone I have been excited about this book since I heard about it over a year before it's release.
But that's just it, I had no expectations for the book other than it was to be the first of it's kind, and hooray for finally having a book like this. I figured it would be pretty basic, covering all the important beginner instructions, and that would be that, no big deal. I looked at the price and figured it was a little high for what I assumed was contained within, but thought that was fair considering the monopoly on the topic. Then I bought it.
This book is so thorough and well designed that it feels like my own personal workshop! That's coming from someone who has taken one, mind you. While this book does not replace a workshop, it is the perfect compliment to one, giving the reader a chance to refine their skills from the workshop without forgetting how to do things properly. Or give it to a beginner and get them started. Or remind an advanced operator of important details they may have forgotten. This book has everything.
It's well organized, detailed, and thorough. What more could you ask for? And shame on me for doubting Jerry's intent to produce a top-notch product!
Here's a sample: The arm hand has severar tasks — to keek the Stheadicam in one place, to start and stop spatial moves...
That's one of many bizarre strings of baffling typos in what should be a clear, concise instructional text. Order the original print version.
At first I was a bit disappointed that there weren't more production stills from movies (I guess copyright issues would be insurmountable) but Holway and Hayball cleverly worked around that problem with elegant artist renderings. My only disappointment was my name being misspelled in reference to the rickshaw and tilt head.
Even as a long-time steadicam operator I learned numerous tricks and discovered previously unknown history of our craft. Excellent Handbook.
