If you want to learn Sonar X2, or any earlier version, these Power books are your best option. I am moving from Sonar 5.2PE to Sonar X2 and without Scott's book, I would be completely lost! I read mine everyday and refer to it while working on tracks, constantly. This is the Sonar user's Bible! Anything you wish to know is easy to find and read through. These Power books of Scott's are thorough and utterly useful, well, "required" is more like it! Get one and trust you are on your way to becoming a Power User- a Sonar X2 Power! user!
When I purchased Sonar 4, I discovered a website called DigiFreq, run by a man named Scott Garrigus. On the site, I found he had compiled a book called "Sonar 4 Power", billed as the ultimate tutorial to the power of Sonar's program. I took the leap and ordered the book. Without it, I might never have gotten into the rich complexities of Sonar.
Scott takes a clear, step-by-step approach to teaching the various elements of Sonar. He assumes you know a LITTLE about DAWs and audio production, but provides enough background to enlighten the newbies (without ever talking down to you).
I have purchased each consecutive publication, since Scott concentrates on new features and additions as much as he does going over previous ground. Each new edition can stand on its own, but is even more helpful if you already have a working knowledge of previous editions of the Sonar programs.
If you are just getting into Sonar X2, you can spend days viewing the specific video tutorials on YouTube (search for Karl Rose for starters, known on the Cakewalk forum as fastbikerboy), and you can spend your money on the Cakewalk-approved videos available through their online store. But, for me, there is nothing quite like having a hard copy you can flip through and quickly find the information you are looking for. I have learned most of what I know about Sonar through Scott's intelligent and informative books that I highly recommend them to anyone who REALLY wants to become a Sonar "power user".
Scott really knows his stuff... and imparts that knowledge in an easy-to-digest way that will have you up and running quickly.
Sonar was the first DAW to take advantage of 64 bit computing a number of years ago as well as other features just now being introduced by other brands. It is built on CAL, or Cakewalk Application Language, and one chapter explains the code and how to customize your workflow.
Scott rates a 5 star review as the book is completely up to date with version X2a. You can't find a better book on Sonar.
The SonarX2 book walks you through major aspects of Installing, Configuring and Efficiently using SonarX2. The style of writing is clear and instructive with a very practical approach to explaining SonarX2 and all of its features and possible uses.
I keep the book right on the desk in my recording studio and find it a great help when I have a "Uh, now how do I do this?" moment.
Scott's style of writing and the organization of the book by logical tasks makes it a great instruction resource. Also, Scott provides a number of pointers/references to get more detailed information throughout the book. Very helpful.
User Level: new to intermediate (Cant speak to advanced users I am intermediate)
Ease/clarity of use: 9 out of 10
