Well i have....i just returned from an amazing trip to Snooker Glen...no i was not there physically, but was mentally, emotionally
and spiritually taken there by the amazing writing and story telling of author D.F.Whipple.....i have never been to the mountains
of Kentucky nor the state of Kentucky.....but i assure you i was just there, taken in by the amazing cast of characters wonderfully
written and fully expressed that cascade out to us .....Whipple seems to have been able to capture every aspect of the lives of
these people, right down to the slang, accents and mannerisms of that region...taking us right into the hearts and soul of these
people and Snooker Glen!
The characters and dialogue ring true throughout and the story flows very dynamically drawn into the plight of the people of
Snooker Glen, most who for the most part live without runnng water, phones or electricity....basic salt of the earth people just trying to survive
with the biggest concern being how to put food on the table for their kids that night , set againest the backround of a mining town, a ruthless owner and the men who risk their lives every day working in those mines.....its hard to let yourself dream big when you don,t know if you will eat that night.
This novel also explores the very topical and explosive subject of illegal immigration letting you see the effects on a town and community who itself is trying to survive......through one the most delightful and wonderfully written characters in the story
Pierre-Francois Laurent, we find out that it should not be "minority vs majority, but minority/majority vs tyranny and the fight againest government trying to run every aspect of our lives through division and so relevent with what is happening with our own
I think DF Whipple lays bare the destructive and negative elements of illegal immigration in an eye opening way as told through a first hand account through the characters of Snooker Glenn.
The cast and array of characters are tangible and wonderful.......and bring to life this "true to life"and sometimes bordering on the "Mystical" tale.....that is loaded with heart, soul and humanity!!!
I also read D.F.Whipples "Shadow Fields"and "Dasha " both of which l would highly recommend as well......
Snooker Glen should be on the suggested reading list for every high school student in the country as well......with all
its life lessons and insights into the human condition....when i was in high school i read Samuel Clemens "Life Along The
MIssissippi" "Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn....and just as Clemens had the ability in his writing to take you to the Mississippi
and feel like you know these people like they were your own friends so has D.F.Whipple taken us to Snooker Glen!
This is a story that "should be read " and absorbed with life lessons learned. ...buy it,read it, absorb it and enjoy as i did!
