I've been yoga on and off for about five years, and I've been consistently practicing it for two years now. This book was recommended to me by a fellow yogi (one much more dedicated than I was at the time) because I wanted to supplement the yoga practice I was doing at the gym with some more technical knowledge on the positions. I love this book and I'm so glad I bought it. Tara starts off the book talking about her history with yoga and the benefits she's found from it. Then she goes on to give you different sequences for whatever you are trying to accomplish, be it flexibility, weight loss, toning, etc. What I've found incredibly valuable that I didn't expect to are the breathing exercises she gives you. I show all my friends how to do a breathing exercise I learned from the book to help with headaches or just get a little more energy when you have that afternoon crash. I've read this book cover to cover in one sitting, and I leave it on my coffee table because the pictures are so great quality and so inspiring. I regularly have friends tell me they want to try yoga after flipping through the book because it makes it seem so easy.

This book makes yoga less intimidating. If you're thinking about starting yoga, looking at this book, and reading this review trying to decide whether you should buy it, the answer is yes. At one point or another, I'm sure you thought that you weren't fit enough for yoga, or flexible enough, or it just wasn't for you. This book is here to tell you otherwise. Yes, there are definitely difficult poses, and you won't get them overnight. But if you're completely new to yoga and don't want to practice in a gym or a studio, I'd definitely recommend this book paired with Tara's yoga Youtube videos. Most of the sequences are to be practiced in just fifteen minutes, so you don't even need very much time.

One of my favorite things about this book is that she goes into the principals of yoga, which I think are what set it apart from other exercise followings like Barre or Pilates. I truly believe yoga benefits you physically as well as mentally, and it's nice that she touches on that in this book. So I also read through it to remind myself to slow down, enjoy life, appreciate what I have. The biggest thing is also the difference between a goal and an intention: you don't have complete control of whether or not you will accomplish a goal (for example, if your goal is to get straight A's, you can do a lot of work for it, but in the end, your teacher determines your grades), but you do have control of your intentions. So yoga is about setting an intention, not a goal.

I'm not a beginner at yoga anymore, but I still constantly refer to this book whenever I am in a slump. I sometimes pick a random page and start a sequence. Other times, I will look in the book for a sequence to cure a certain ailment or accomplish a particular intention.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in yoga. There's a lot of value to be had from it, whether you are a beginner or an advanced yogi.

I'm a former seven-year professional Pilates teacher who came back to yoga, later in life. My background, originally, was a year of kung fu and a martial art called cha yon ru, and then a year of Iyengar Yoga at Fish Crane Iyengar in New Orleans, and then accidentally walking into a Pilates class and falling down the rabbit hole of professional Pilates instruction for several years.

When I quit teaching, I stopped working out, and defensively gained thirty pounds. Something about having to make a living from what your body looks like distinctly creeped me out after awhile. Fast forward a decade in another profession, and I just want to be able to keep flexibility and movement, so I've tried taking classes--and having been a movement professional, I've learned the hard way that it really matters, emotionally and spiritually, who you let into your physical "space."

Tara Stiles is one of the only yoga teachers whose work I can really sit with. I've worked with this book for several months, and I feel like it helps me be more o.k. as a person. She's not narcissistic, or out there, or vaguely off, like so many people we encounter in the "fitness" world.

I feel safe doing yoga from her books. I'm so glad that she and Strala exist; I feel like I can do my yoga, and feel good about it, without being pressured to be someone or somewhere else. Recommended!

This book is really nice for any level of yoga participation. There are clear explanations and pictures for wash pose. It explains what each pose is good for. That's all very beneficial, especially to a beginner like me. There is no shortage of poses either. From very simple sitting or standing basics all the way to inversions and more difficult backbends, they're in here! I do like that towards the back of the book there are suggested routines you can follow based on what you want to focus on. That is very helpful for someone like me that wouldn't know where to start on putting one together myself. What I wish this book did have is a beginning chapter, or even a foreword explaining a bit about yoga and the different types and stuff. For me, just getting into it, I'd like to know the bare basics instead of just trying to learn poses. Other than that this book is very clear, detailed, and helpful. I would recommend this to a friend or anyone that wants to learn poses on their own.

After doing yoga on and off for over ten years, I finally felt comfortable and confident enough to give it a go without relying on an instructor to correct positions. (If you haven't practiced yoga in the past, I'd personally recommend using this only to supplement classtime - holding poses correctly is key to avoiding injuries. I know my body well, and even after many years of ballet and quite a bit of time in a yoga studio, I entered book territory cautiously.)

That said, Stiles offers good explanations of both basic and more advanced poses. I re-read them sometimes just to remind myself how I can take each pose deeper.

The format is fun -- sometimes I flip to a chapter based on whether I want to feel "sexy," "fit," etc. The mini-routines are enough to make you feel good, but none of them takes more than around 20 minutes. Little expert commentaries are fine, but I didn't find them overly helpful; they're primarily touting the benefits of yoga, of which I (happily!) don't need to be convinced.

My one real gripe is with the kindle formatting. I try to buy Kindle versions when possible to reduce the physical clutter in my life, but this would have been worth finding a spot for on the bookshelf. Pagination with the Kindle is nonexistent, and poses are sometimes split between screens. It's a pain. Navigating is slow and clunky. I know that I can adjust the page size, but in general I think that this kind of book is just better to have in a hard copy.

For content, though, I'd recommend it!

I am 50 years old and out of shape. I've been really bummed out since I have had trouble finding some type of exercise I can stick with. Then I found Tara Stiles on youtube, and I got hooked. I always avoided yoga, thinking it was too difficult for someone like me, but she shows even the most out of shape person how to get started and how to feel comfortable with where you are now. I got the book, and it's a wonderful book on it's own, since it gives some really good ideas, tips, and encouragement. Coupled with her youtube videos, it's really all you need to start a yoga practice on your own time, in your own place if that's what you want. (It's good to see the poses in action, and to use the book as a reference for more detail behind the poses.) It also gives information for more advanced poses, so I think it would be great even if you're not a beginner like me. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and if someone can make me enthusiastic about exercise, that's saying something. I have also started to use her meditation and breathing tips, which I probably wouldn't have done in the past either. I think it's great she is bringing yoga to everyone. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in improving mental and physical health. And she makes it fun.
