This book makes yoga less intimidating. If you're thinking about starting yoga, looking at this book, and reading this review trying to decide whether you should buy it, the answer is yes. At one point or another, I'm sure you thought that you weren't fit enough for yoga, or flexible enough, or it just wasn't for you. This book is here to tell you otherwise. Yes, there are definitely difficult poses, and you won't get them overnight. But if you're completely new to yoga and don't want to practice in a gym or a studio, I'd definitely recommend this book paired with Tara's yoga Youtube videos. Most of the sequences are to be practiced in just fifteen minutes, so you don't even need very much time.
One of my favorite things about this book is that she goes into the principals of yoga, which I think are what set it apart from other exercise followings like Barre or Pilates. I truly believe yoga benefits you physically as well as mentally, and it's nice that she touches on that in this book. So I also read through it to remind myself to slow down, enjoy life, appreciate what I have. The biggest thing is also the difference between a goal and an intention: you don't have complete control of whether or not you will accomplish a goal (for example, if your goal is to get straight A's, you can do a lot of work for it, but in the end, your teacher determines your grades), but you do have control of your intentions. So yoga is about setting an intention, not a goal.
I'm not a beginner at yoga anymore, but I still constantly refer to this book whenever I am in a slump. I sometimes pick a random page and start a sequence. Other times, I will look in the book for a sequence to cure a certain ailment or accomplish a particular intention.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in yoga. There's a lot of value to be had from it, whether you are a beginner or an advanced yogi.
When I quit teaching, I stopped working out, and defensively gained thirty pounds. Something about having to make a living from what your body looks like distinctly creeped me out after awhile. Fast forward a decade in another profession, and I just want to be able to keep flexibility and movement, so I've tried taking classes--and having been a movement professional, I've learned the hard way that it really matters, emotionally and spiritually, who you let into your physical "space."
Tara Stiles is one of the only yoga teachers whose work I can really sit with. I've worked with this book for several months, and I feel like it helps me be more o.k. as a person. She's not narcissistic, or out there, or vaguely off, like so many people we encounter in the "fitness" world.
I feel safe doing yoga from her books. I'm so glad that she and Strala exist; I feel like I can do my yoga, and feel good about it, without being pressured to be someone or somewhere else. Recommended!
That said, Stiles offers good explanations of both basic and more advanced poses. I re-read them sometimes just to remind myself how I can take each pose deeper.
The format is fun -- sometimes I flip to a chapter based on whether I want to feel "sexy," "fit," etc. The mini-routines are enough to make you feel good, but none of them takes more than around 20 minutes. Little expert commentaries are fine, but I didn't find them overly helpful; they're primarily touting the benefits of yoga, of which I (happily!) don't need to be convinced.
My one real gripe is with the kindle formatting. I try to buy Kindle versions when possible to reduce the physical clutter in my life, but this would have been worth finding a spot for on the bookshelf. Pagination with the Kindle is nonexistent, and poses are sometimes split between screens. It's a pain. Navigating is slow and clunky. I know that I can adjust the page size, but in general I think that this kind of book is just better to have in a hard copy.
For content, though, I'd recommend it!
