1,2曲目の「California girls」と「Just a Gigolo/I ain't got nobody」は、ミニアルバム「Crazy From The Heat」からのオマケ。

A great hard rock album!

I'm a professional musician, bass guitarist - the same age as these musicians. I've been around, performed a lot, seen VH when they first started, etc. I have every single VH album. I have most of David Lee Roth's albums of this period. I think this one is the best of the bunch. Every musician is excellent. Every song holds its own. This album is as good as it gets as far as quality. If one were to take a blind hearing of this CD (not know who the musicians were) they would have to say this is a very good hard rock album. Every song has its rewards. I'm wearing out this CD and will get another one when it does. As music is so subjective, I suggest one forget about Van Halen and all of that baggage and just listen to this album on its own merits, preferably with headphones and loud. The more one listens to it the more rewarding it becomes. You'll pick up a lot of intricacies done by the other musicians as well. Thank you DLR band for creating a fun album. For those who are looking for higher standard of musicality, song writing and less commercial material; well you will find it here. I can perform every song on this album. There are unique chord changes here on almost every song. Not your standard 1-4-5 progressions. The song Skyscraper is most interesting and unique for hard rock. This is not Kansas, Yes or ELP, but there is great quality in straight hard rock as well. For those wanting LZ's Kashmire in hard rock, well this ain't it. But within its genre, this album is as good as it gets. Thank you DLR. Hot Dog and a Shake is pure VH. This is a party album a fun album, and still holds its own after 25 years. For all of those VH fans out there, this album alone should tell you that Eddie was not the only talent in that band. I would say Steve Vai is every bit as good as Eddie - tasteful and talented. It's just different. Being a bass guitarist and a guitarist myself, I'm a big fan of Billy Sheehan and Steve Vai. Being a musician, I can appreciate every note of this album. For anyone considering a DLR album, your money will be well spent here. Of all of DLR's albums I like this one the best.

Dave takes his first steps away from the VH sound...

...and earns a B+ for it. I think it`s generally agreed that Steve Vai influenced "Skyscraper" a bit more than its predecessor, the marvellous "Eat `Em And Smile", and I think there`s a bit less of Billy Sheehan`s brilliance here too. So you lose the hard rock perfection of songs on that album like "Big Trouble" and "Ladies Nite In Buffalo" (two of DLR`s best ever, and I include songs by the mighty VH in this assessment). Instead, you get the slightly 80s feel of the title track and "Stand Up". This version opens up with two tracks from the "Crazy From The Heat" EP, but they don`t really count and add little. When I bought this in 1988 after hearing "Just Like Paradise" I was astonished by it and it started the journey that led me to still listen to Classic Van Halen today, but overall it doesn`t compare favourably with those records. But it is better than the subsequent DLR solo records, at least until the underrated "DLR Band". I like this record a lot, and it still gets the odd spin, mainly for the acoustic "Damn Good", the powerful "Knucklebones", the moody "Hina" and "Perfect Timing". It`s a good album but mixes lots of styles with slightly qualified success...I don`t really need to hear "Hot Dog And A Shake" or "Two Fools A Minute" that often, or "Bottom Line". Worth buying, as is everything that DLR appears on.

Funambolico

Vocal overdrive from Diamond Dave
I was disapointed when I first heard this album, so much so that I gave it a wide berth until I heard Damn Good recently. This song really stood out from other stuff I had cycling around the iPod. So much so that I bought a copy from Amazon to see if my memory of the album was accurate. I have gone through it about 8 times end to end in the last two weeks and cannot figure out why I initially disliked it. It has not aged quite as well as Eat 'Em and Smile, but then again......
It has the core team from Eat 'Em and Smile and they are still playing out of their skins, cutting the rug like only Vai, Sheehan and Roth can. It has an interesting production with some most unusual vocal treatments. DLR was pushing the boat out here, call and response from opposite speakers, layered backing vocals all care of himself, vocals from way off-center in the stereo mix and pitch shifting judiciously applied on occasion. Possibly too adventurous for some which is why this one did not take off like the first. I much prefer it too anything he has done since.
Worth getting a hold of.
