It's difficult to know why Cliff has done so well. His voice is easily identifiable, but hasn't any great range or versatility. He was a good-looking young man and has kept both his looks and his figure throughout his life, but there are many others who can say the same. He's had good songs, but there have always been good songs out there for artists who have not had anything like the longevity of Cliff. His personality is pleasant and he hasn't been associated with any tabloid-inspiring tales of debauchery, but if that was the criterion for being popular, many of us would qualify. Somehow he has managed to keep himself relevant to generation after generation of fans, in the UK and around the world, and done it in such a way as to make it seem absolutely natural; he's just always been there.
Cliff has always been defined by his singles; his albums have really just been collections of the songs which weren't good enough to be singles. This set, then, is the way to experience Cliff in all the many and varied stages of his career. Regrettably, it is not currently available for retail purchase in the US, although it can be obtained from the UK easily enough. Those who are familiar with Cliff will find themselves steeped in nostalgia stretching back over 50 years. Those who are coming to him for the first time will hear what an icon sounds like. Whatever it is Cliff has, I wish they could find out, bottle it and sell it. I'd be first in line!
To have so many singles, from such a wide period of music history, is amazing. What a collection. My favorite: "Constantly", one of his earlier recordings.
