5つ星のうち 5.0 5/3/1 Works 2017/1/22

It works. Here is the astonishing part...I'm in my mid 60s and am at or near strength levels I was achieving in my late 30s by following, Wendler's 5/3/1 program. I was never a competitive lifter. I used weight training for overall fitness and assistance with jujitsu/akido training. I have lifted off and on since I was a teen.

Wendler promotes that technique is everything. If you can't follow proper technique, the weight is too heavy, but by keeping strict form, you minimize the possibility of injury and engage the body in the most efficient way to move the most weight consistently over time. This is especially important to someone in my age range. Wendler doesn't spend much time teaching proper technique, but there are lots of great squat, dead lift, bench press and military press tutorials on Youtube, by greats like Chris Duffin, Ed Coan, Mark Rippetoe and others. Wendler's focus in on how to work his program, which, in my humble opinion, is the most effective strength training program ever. If you are (or seek to be), a competitive lifter, Wendler has newer books with more focused lifting programs "5/3/1 for Powerlifting" and "Beyond 5/3/1". But for overall strength gains for the typical lifter, training to improve performance in other sports, general fitness/strength or if you are like me and just training to hold back the "grim reaper", 5/3/1 is the gold standard. I highly recommend this book.

I had lost interest in lifting for several years, but Wendler's 5/3/1 has greatly renewed my enthusiasm for weight training and I look forward to each and every workout.

This program really works. I have been using it for 4 months. I have greatly increased my strength, can finally do pull ups unassisted (only 2-3 at at time, but that is way better than zero), can bench press 25lb more than my body weight (225, I weigh 200), can leg press 450lb for 10 reps, can shoulder press what I used to bench (135). This workout is totally awesome, and I don't find it boring at all- every week, some weeks every workout, I break a new goal, just like the author promises. I usually leave the gym in 30-40 min, feeling great. I have lost about 22lb doing this workout, and have lost 4-5 inches off my pants size. I used to be a weak, obese man, and now I am making steady progress toward real strength.

5つ星のうち 5.0 Do you even Lift? Buy this book. 2014/10/9

I've been following Wendler 5/3/1 for over a year now, after an 8+ year from any type of exercise. I have a background in strength training, but I had gotten lazy and time crunched. I wanted a program that was easy to follow with minimal pre-planning on my end.

Wendler 5/3/1 is easy, but having at least some prior strength training knowledge would be better.

On this program I've lost 40 lb. with another 40 to go. My strength has gone way up. I'm 36 yr/old 6'1 305 (walking around) I currently bench press 320 lb. Military press 200 lb. Squat 350 and Deadlift 435 lb. I'm still steadily getting stronger.

If you're looking for a really good program to follow, then this is a great one to use. The program is centered around the 4 Big Lifts and assistance work. Once you have your 4 Big Lifts down, you can go a couple of different directions with the assistance work. There's great tips for if you're pressed for time, or busting plateaus.

Jim Wendler's other book Beyond 5/3/1 will be my next purchase to drop the other 40 lb. and get to my goal of a 405 bench press.

5つ星のうち 5.0 Easy to read, no BS, true to its name. Must have if you want to be strong. 2016/8/2

Great basis for getting strong, big, and powerful. I program workouts for a small crossfit gym, and this has been instrumental in understanding and implementing a no-BS strength program into the lives of our members. Wendler has published a very straightforward piece of literature that should be read by anyone interested in getting strong. It's not convoluted, it doesn't go off on ridiculous tangents (Westside, Louie). It doesn't include an obscene amount of anecdotes and attempts at humorous musing (SS, Rip). It gets to the point so I don't have to sift through filler to get what I want: strong.

5つ星のうち 4.0 For weightlifters by a weightlifter 2012/11/8

First, before you dismiss everything I say (see next paragraph), I've been lifting 3-6 times a week for the past two years. I just spent 9 months working through The New Rules of Lifting: Six Basic Moves for Maximum Muscle. (I didn't take an entire year because I skipped the Fat Loss workouts.) While a fan of NROL, I like 5/3/1's emphasis on strength training. It's about getting stronger and bigger.

That being said, I've only been doing this for about a month. If I don't go ahead and write the review, however, I probably never will.

Pros:
Wendler writes in a conversational manner; it's much like talking to a (funny, knowledgeable) guy at the gym
Percentages: I don't have to guess about how much I should be lifting for each set, and maxing out (reps) on the final set guarantees I'm not slacking
The de-loading week allows for recovery without a week away from the gym

Cons:
I'm guessing it was self-published (organizational, typographical, and formatting issues)
Cost ($30 for something you can mostly glean from the Internet; in fairness, I don't think Wendler expects everyone to buy the book)
While the emphasis is on each day's big lift (9-15 total reps), the assistance exercises (5 X 10) often exceed the big lift in volume

UPDATE: I've completed another cycle. Using a 1RM calculator (just google it), I can convert my "maxes" into 1-rep maxes. While this may not be a perfect conversion, it is very helpful in setting goals for max reps with varying percentages. In this way, I can aim for a new 1RM every workout (except for when deloading, of course).
