So dull that I have only made it to chapter six and hence , given up . Cannot imagine why Bagshaw is hailed as the natural successor to Jilly Cooper - I couldn't give one jot for any of the characters I've encountered thus far and the whole concept of a reality programme based around a village full of real people is , in legal terms alone , unworkable ; everyone has a right to privacy in this country which means people have to sign a release to allow themselves, their kids under 18 and even their property to be filmed - such a crock of crap I would rather watch paint dry .
I have read a few Tilly Bagshawe's and enjoyed some more than others. This is the latest instalment in the swell valley series (the first being the inheritance).
The books centres around a television programme about Wraggsbottom Farm, which is at the centre of the village and the residents who live there. These range from celebrities to wealthy politicians to the village vicar, who is non too happy about the camera crews!
I struggled to get into this and nearly gave up but something kept me going. For me, there are slightly too many characters and it was tricky to keep track of them all. I did really like the character of Laura and was rooting for her but struggled with Macy. Never a more selfish character have I come across.
This was ok to while away a few hours but I have definitely read better. I also think you need to read the inheritance first before this one, as it will make more sense.
It has been quite a few years since I first read Tilly Bagshawes books and recently I reread them and It hit me how much they are patterned on JillyCoopers books.Unlike Jillys books some of these characters are truly horrible.Unlike Jillys books these books are so utterly snobbish and that horrible woman Magdas boss is a truly disgusting and vile character. No one writes like Jilly Cooper certainly not Tilly Bradshawe .. '
Reading can be a form of escapism for many, including myself, from the struggles of our working and personal lives. So when I read the description of this book there could of been a temptation to just move on to another book. However because I love the way Tilly writes I found myself clicking on 'buy' and I wasn't disappointed.
Wraggsbottom farm is Gabe and Laura Baxter's life, but times are hard and the lure of the small screen calls out to Laura, could her television career rise like a phoenix to save their rural idyll and their livelihood which means so much to them or will jealously, politics, pride and vengeance all around the valley get in their way. Be careful what you wish for...the grass isn't always greener...you know the story but Tilly Bagshawe makes it a great read.
