The Seventh Plague: A Sigma Force Novel (Sigma Force Novels Book 12) (English Edition) Kindle版
“When it comes to the blending of action, adventure, history, and science, there is no other author who does it better than Rollins. Fans of Clive Cussler, Steve Berry, and Michael Crichton should already have Rollins on their mandatory reading list.” (Booklist (starred review))
James Rollins is the author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. His Sigma series has been lauded as one of the “top crowd pleasers” (New York Times) and one of the "hottest summer reads" (People magazine). In each novel, acclaimed for its originality, Rollins unveils unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets—and he does it all at breakneck speed and with stunning insight. He lives in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

I wrote the above paragraph when I had only read about 10% of the book, and I have to admit that, now I've read the whole thing, I feel very mean spirited for having been so petty ! This book (despite a few very minor quibbles about typos, and the occasional grammar, syntax and vocab errors) is GREAT ! A really pleasant surprise, which really adds something new to all of the various genres it crosses between. The apocalyptic scenario posited here is extremely well researched and very plausible.
Cross referencing a pandemic in the modern world with the Biblical plagues, adding a heavy dash of real-time science (superconductor tech, using the ionosphere as a giant battery, global warming and climate change) and then blending them into a fantastic century - spanning conspiracy... There's just SO much good stuff to say about this book !
SPOILER: and I have to add that the book's description of the consequences of Hartnell's hubris - no matter how well intentioned - the huge Arctic storm, and the atmospheric disruption that causes the appearance of an Aurora Borealis effect over the equator - was one of the best 'end of the world' scenarios I have ever come across. It actually made the hairs on the back of my neck stand to attention !
A lively read with a serious foundation in science, and one that perhaps reflects some of the problems that our planet is now facing.
Edit: finished the book, very good! Really enjoyed it. Different in a good way. Only downside was shoot our chapters, gets a little boring reading an entire chapter on shoot outs when realistically nobody's going to die.
