More from Enigma
Enigma, the Romanian musician, Michael Cretu and friends will never win any prizes for invention. The music of his fourth album adheres firmly to the blueprint of his other releases--mini-pop symphonies. This is a small-screen scrawl that takes in classical music samples in the style of Gregorian chants and Wagner-style pomp and circumstance, and MOR vocals, which recall Celine Dion and Phil Collins, provided by Ruth Ann Boyle of Olive, Cretu's wife, Sandra and Andru Donalds. Bedded down to ambient's lack of beats and coloured by pop's sense of fun, there are no obvious hits on the very smooth and moody, The Screen Behind the Mirror. However there is a certain guilty pleasure in kicking back after dinner and floating down stream to the almost funky "Push out the limits" and the bombastic slab of Euro-pop that is "Traces(Light and Weight". --Olivia Ferenczi
Very much praised by critics and most Enigma fans. But I personally found it disappointing.
Not just because it is not at par with the debut album, but also because unlike the latter, each of the tunes--while being typically Enigma--lacks individual character. Put cruelly, they are as indistinguishable from one another as the typical Japanese pop idol's songs--in techno.
Even judging from Michael Cretu's genius in producing Andru Donald's revival album and in the choice of first single, but ENDING THERE, one wonders . . .
The colours of Enigma vinyl mean a fab looking transparent Orange LP. And it looks great on the turntable. On first play there were a few pops and clicks, and it skipped slightly in one place but that must’ve been dirt from manufacturing as subsequent plays have been much better, without the need for cleaning. First Enigma colours LP that I’ve found to have any real manufacturing debris on it.
Overall the music is a gorgeous downtempo electronics celebration for the summer months. Couple that with Delerium’s Karma on coke green vinyl and you’ve got the perfect vinyl late 90’s to 00’s summer soundtrack!
If you like Enigma, you like this. Good for meditation, although their other cd's are better.
The introduction (borrowing heavily from Vangelis' Albedo 0.39) opens the album well and I adore the female vocals voicing Cretu's message ("basic instinct, social life. Paradoxes side by side") whilst accompanied by his trademark tribal chanting. Gravity of Love is without doubt one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard (ideal for intimate evenings in with a girlfriend!) and affirms my opinion that good music is the best head-trip there is. Endless Quest and Between Mind & Heart are also wonderful pieces which deserve top volume.
Overall, Screen Behind the Mirror is essential listening to Enigma fans and is a beautiful piece to anyone who likes music for the mind. After after each Enigma outing I often wondered how better a next album might be and thought of it with some trepidation. Screen Behind the Mirror confirms my belief that Micheal Cretu is perhaps one of the most gifted musicians in the world today.
