Kawashima's piano playing is extra hard hitting, with large dynamic range, powerful forte and fortissimo playing, and abundant steel, and all the while he plays reasonably fast, but not at incredible speed. Subtle, gentle, nuanced, and lyrical, it basically is not. And while one would think that would make the disc unsuccessful, the pianist is compelling in delivering his vision. Not first choice Schubert, but good for the right mood and occasion.
