Not perfect for me but worthy of the rating

I've owned "the best" half dozen CD's of this piece, believe this one is overall best for the combination of performance and sonics, an objective view. However, when I wish to listen I pull Karajan. The DGG Karajan is less "clear", more distortion, a good recording while lacking dynamic range in comparison to Serebrier. (This can be a bit of an advantage though because I listen mostly on B&W PM1's in my study and the high dynamic range is sometimes a pain in changing volume.) A little compression can be a good thing! Before I wrote this review I debated giving the disc away, being at an age of shedding property when "less is more". I'll probably keep it, listen seldom. This recording is excellent and deserves 5 stars. Why the ambivalence? What sets Karajan apart - for me - is a lush, sonically voluptuous, romantic tone. It is a personal bias but I acknowledge Serebrier is the better recording. To me Serebrier feels (sounds) more structured and sterile. As I write this, I'm listening to Schwalbe's violin (Karajan). Wonderful.

Sumptuous performance - just as it ought to be!

When I listen to Rimsky's masterpiece, I want a rich, romantic, over-the-top performance. Rimsky-Korsakov was a great master of orchestration as well as gorgeous melodies, and this performance delivers the goods! Wonderful pacing, excellent sonics. A fine performance of the Russian Easter Overture too. I think that I have nine recordings of Scheherazade and this one is one of my top 2 or 3 favorites. I don't think that anyone who is interested in this work will be disappointed!
A Brisk and, One Hopes, Non-Definitive Performance
2003年8月11日 - (Amazon.com)
I purchased this recording after reading reviews proclaiming that it was no less than the definitive recording of Scheherezade. I hope for the sake of my appreciation for the work that this recording is not in fact definitive. I have not studied the score of the work, but the tempo in this recording is molto allegro, and the dynamics tend toward a near mezzo piano monotone. Lush and fantastical, two adjectives that I associate with this work, do not describe this rather physically and emotionally brisk recording. If this IS in fact the definitive recording, then those conductors who have taken a more romantic approach to the work have only enhanced the work. One might do better to spend the money for this expensive disc on two less expensive and yet richer recordings.

Great symphonic recording has space, air, imaging, realistic hall dynamics and clear instrument placement on the sound-stage. I good one to take when auditioning stereo equipment. The performance was good too.
Schererazade - one of my fav classical music
2014年12月14日 - (Amazon.com)
I bought this particular music because it is classical music I recalled loving it many years ago. Recently decided I wanted to buy some classical music that I knew I liked, for a more permanent part of my music collection. I love this particular music. I consider my CD collection as the 'masters' of the music I loaded into my computer, which is where I usually listen to it, or on iPod. This is part of my collection and I recommend this particular music if you like classical. Give it a listen.
