I own about 20 different recordings of the Cello Suites and each has its own range of virtues. However this is the one I keep returning to and listen to the most.

This has got to be the best recording of the cello suites available! Some might quibble about many of Bylsma's decisions - including the use of a modern bow - but period performance shouldn't become just a matter of rules - performers were not like that in Bach's time. Bylsma provides an amazingly sensitive, heartfelt reading of the suites, and the Servais cello has an absolutely amazing sound. The cello piccolo in the sixth suite is a special treat too. Some of Bylsma's tempi may take a bit getting used to, but some of the improvisations are wonderful - the end of the prelude to the D minor for example. This will always be my companion!
I'm no music critic but I judge the Bach Cello Suites by the pace of the very beginning of the first one. For my taste, Mstisllav Rostropovich plays it much too quickly. (Sorry, Slava!) When I heard the first few notes of the Anner Bylsma performance I knew I had bought perfection. Played on the Sevais Strad, lent to Bylsma for the recording by the Smithsonian Institution, these two discs gave me hours of joy. They arrived in the post at about noon one Saturday and I played them in my little sheltered-accommodation flat until my neighbour rang my doorbell at around 8.00pm and very politely asked if I'd mind turning down the music. He'd had more Bach than he could stand! If you really like the Bach cello suites, this is the recording to buy. As an added bonus, the liner notes tell the somewhat hilarious story of the Servais cello.
Bylsma is amazing, I like his interpretation the most over: Fournier, Ma, Rostropovich etc. beautiful soulful I think Bach would be honored to hear his work interpreted by this excellent musician.
