A Window On A Long-Secret Treasure
2013年7月5日 - (Amazon.com)
This magnificent book provides a look at Russian history and Tsarist architecture that has been sadly missing on the western side of the Atlantic for much of the 20th century. From the time of Peter the Great until their overthrow in 1917, the Romanovs were constantly building and modifying their collections of estates and palaces which became the kinds of places that could only exist in the imagination. The palaces shown here were built with the expertise of Italian, German, and British architects and engineers who had virtually no limits on what they could produce. Peter the Great made it a mission to pull Russia into the modern era and establish St. Petersburg as the Venice of the north. Russia retained enough vestiges of feudalism to provide practically endless wealth, manpower, and natural resources to create an unbelievably beautiful collection of private residences for the Imperial family and their fabulous art collections. It is no surprise that many of these structures were looted and suffered mightily during WWII, but the Russians have done an amazing job to get much of the damage restored and have these glorious places open to the public as museums, which continues to be a long-term project. While the parts of places like the Catherine Palace which are accessible appear as though the war never touched them, there are still large areas that will likely take decades to complete the restoration. Fortunately original plans and photos as well as the capacity of exactly reproducing details like wall coverings, parquet floors, statuary, etc. have enabled the restoration results to be simply phenomenal. To travel there and take all this in would be difficult and expensive, but to browse leisurely through this fine book is a most agreeable substitute. I would certainly recommend this most favorably to the reader.
