Amazon
Although it was viewed as one of Elton John's more lightweight efforts upon its 1975 release--possibly because it followed only half a year after the acclaimed Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (and partly because many thought the album was released to fulfil a contractual obligation)--Rock of the Westies appears in retrospect to be his last great rock album. It certainly does rock consistently harder than any other John album, with guitarist Davey Johnstone even getting cowriting credits (with John and Bernie Taupin) on the opening "Medley: Yell Help/Wednesday" and "Grow Some Funk of Your Own". Lyricist Taupin seems to be going off the deep end here at times with titles like "Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future)" and "Billy Bone & the White Bird", but "Island Girl" was another huge hit for the pair. And the CD version adds the wonderful pop gem "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart", which turned KiKi Dee into an eternal Trivial Pursuit answer. --Bill Holdship

If you're into standard "hits", "Westies" probably won't be your cup of tea. But otherwise, you might just develop a taste for it.
This one, along with "Captain", "YBR", "Caribou" and several others belonged to a small collection of goodies I bought as a pre-teen - and I found them all, including "Westies" good. Elton John was my idol as a kid - 30 years on, I marvel at the instinct of babes.
While I was in college, my angered step-father threw all of my LPs in the garbage. Since then I have recovered only several as CDs, "Westies" being one of them.
It came in the mail yesterday from the UK to Germany. I`ve been playing it ever since - you can get high on this music, it's hypnotic - the energy blazes, it's simply "feel-good" stuff, from the word go - with a couple of fantastic exceptions.
From the "unfinished" medley to the finish with Kiki Dee, there is not a bad song in the lot. Elton John is in a league all his own - he may do "funk", but he doesn`t ever do "junk".
You almost have to think of a whole new language with which you could even begin to express the collective genius of Elton John and Bernie Taupin - for me, "genius" just doesn't do it.
Albeit, there is quirky stuff on this CD. But, so what! Rather than think it "strange" or "weird", I think of it simply as only one sort of the Wizardry that these guys can do. It's a gem amongst gems for that very reason.
"Dan Dare" creative! "Island Girl" sizzles! Those paunchy drums are fantastic! Eltons falsetto, never better! "Funk", well, the name says it all - Elton Johns sissy comments- "oh, and it hurt sooo much!" will leave you rollicking throughout. "Street Kids", you can dance to it, sing to it, it's great - ditto with "Hard Luck Story" "owee, owee, owee" to you too! Dig that insistent bass.
"Billy bones" is an unusually outrageous romp - "check it out"!
"Feed Me" was funnily enough my favorite as a 12 year old - now that I understand the numbing reality of it - the feverish passion is as bone-chilling as the theme - but as a favorite it's given way to:
"I feel like a bullet": This track is spell-binding for the idea alone. A henchman sacrificing his long-time love at the block - on a ruse, causing deep anguish, grief and shame. Elton John's rendering: beyond the beyond the beyond - and way beyond that.
Not only the line about "walking to the wagon", what about the opening? What about "I'm as low as a hired assasin is, you know I'm as cold as a hired sword"? which all ties in with the great opening lines about cutting and punching - about having gone in for the kill - "for a new deck of cards"? You can't get much grittier and low-down than that. Add to it a voice disallowing an equal and defying human description and you have "Bullet". It breaks your heart because you realize that somewhere along the line this has been your own experience. Painfully gorgeous.
The CD release notes state that this was the sound quality they would have wanted if the technology had been available at the time. I would beg to differ as I’ve heard better recordings from the period and superior remasters.
This recording is very clear but lacks dynamic range and sounds compressed. It is a quiet recording which seems to make the sound seem “pinched”. However it should be bourne in mind that this is an old recording and therefore limited by the original recording.
It has a broad sound stage and the channel balance is good but the recording lacks sparkle and never quite comes alive. The drums are not sharp and crisp but soft and muffled. Pianos and keyboards are very good but the backing vocals and rhythm section seem to have mixed down together and lost detail. Elton’s voice does not always rise above the instruments.
The vocoder and guitars are sharp and stand out perhaps at the expense of the other instruments. The sound quality of this recording is admirably consistent being clear and not in the slightest “muddy”. Sadly it seems to lack get up and go. It is missing that indefinable “wow” factor.
For its age this is a high quality recording which os both listenable and enjoyable. It is worth getting for your collection.
These remasters are famous for being extremely true in packaging to the originals, including sleeve formats (simple versus gatefold, inserts, record labels etc.) The only place where this doesn’t quite match up to the original is in the lyrics sheet, which is printed on flimsy paper rather than card stock – no big shakes. Other than that, this both stands up to my original (which still sounds fantastic all these years later) and adds the benefit of having been remastered with state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology.
(Side note: My only wish regarding this particular LP purchase is that whoever packaged it for shipping had taken the extra effort to put it in a cardboard box, rather than simply slap a shipping label on the outer cellophane and send it out the door (see photo). Really, Amazon, you should be ashamed!)

Mich interessieren und begeistern die treibenden "I feel like a Bullet", "Street Kids" und "Feed me" viel mehr.
"Grey Seal" (GYBR) letzte Woche in Oberhausen. Aber "Rock of the Westies" wird unterdrückt.
Traut Euch!
