昔LPを持っていたが、久しぶりに聞きたくなってCDで再度購入。時代を超えて名作は名作ですねぇ〜。良いぞマンフレッドマン！

このバンドの最高傑作でしょう。
プログレ＆フュージョン風味のハードロック。
流麗なキーボードにブルージーなギターが気持ちよいです。
そして表題にも書きましたが「光に目もくらみ」。
ブルース・スプリングスティーンのカバーですが
本家原曲を遙かに上回る感動的なできばえ。
ハード＆プログレ好きな人には理想的な曲調と言えるでしょう。
タイトルだけでは？の人でも聞けば「ああ！この曲か！」ってな
出会いもありえます。そのくらいどっかで耳にしてるかもの名曲
ですから。

７６年発表の７作目。前作を最後にミック・ロジャースが脱退。新たにクリス・トンプソン(vo、g)、デイヴ・フレット(g) を迎えて制作された作品。再び取り上げたブルース・スプリングスティーンの１．が全米１位（全英６位）を記録し、アルバムも全米１０位（全英１０位）を記録。本作がアルバムとしてはグループの出世作となった。２．では元インクレディブル・ストリング・バンドのマイク・ヘロンの楽曲を取り上げるなど渋い選曲も見られるが、他はマンを中心に共作されたメンバーのオリジナルである。スーザン・リンチ、ドレン＆イレネ・チャンター、元メンバーのミック・ロジャースがバック・コーラスとして参加。他にも合唱隊、リコーダー、管弦楽器奏者の他、サックス・ソロとしてジョン・ハイズマン夫人のバーバラ・トンプソンも参加している。
１．のポップかつメロウな仕上がりには一皮向けたかのような印象も受けるが、この時代のクロス・オーヴァー／フュージョンに呼応しつつ、自らの資質をうまく活かした高い完成度を見せている。静と動のパートをうまく取り入れながらもプログレ臭はなし。適度に辛いがマイルドなヴォーカル。泣きのリード・ギター、スペーシーなコーラス、フェイサーの掛かったパーカッシヴかつ滑らかなオルガンのフレーズも強い印象を残す。確かにこれならヒットしない訳がない。２．はメロトロン、ストリング・マシン、女性ヴォーカルなどを加えてスペーシーかつ重厚に仕上げたソウル・バラード。バーバラのサックス・ソロを含めてこちらも必殺の仕上がり。３．もメロトロンの混声合唱が入ったメロウなバラード。ラス・パラードが書きそうなタイプの佳曲である。５．は楽曲も素晴しいが、新加入のギタリストの凄まじいソロが聞き物。
前作も素晴しかったが、本作ではぐうの音も出ないほどの高い完成度を見せている。新メンバーの実力も高く演奏も新鮮。楽曲面の充実度は言うに及ばずだろう。マンの演奏する人力テクノ的なプレイも時代を考えると興味深い。

シングルで大ヒットしたBruce SpringsteenのBlinded By The Lightは間違いなくオリジナルよりこちらの方が素晴らしい。こなれたアレンジとタイトな演奏は必聴。同じBruce作のSpirits In The Nightも、今回のリマスター再発に当たりクリス・トンプソンのヴォーカル・バージョンで収録された。その他にも叙情的なSinging The Dolphin Throughの女性コーラスは泣かせるし、全般にChris Thompsonが絶頂である。そして、きっちりと構築されたアレンジがやはりMannならでは、とうならせる。
なお、歌詞は掲載されていない。

When this was first released, Spirits in The Night wasn't originally on the album, as seen on the Brown Cover. It was released as a single. Within weeks the album was re-released as a green album, including Spirits In The night. So most of us back in the day wound up buying two copies of this album, all in the space and time of just a few months. Blinded By The Light and Spirits In the Night both being written by Bruce Springsteen. As well as other songs MMEB would record on other albums and turn into hits. This album was the first album since Solar Fire that really put Manfred Mann's Earthband on the radar and on the radio. Blinded By the Light, and subsequently Spirits In The Night both would literally consume the airwaves along with many other popular bands of the time. Rumors by Fleetwood Mac, Out Of The Blue by ELO all would hit the airwaves at pretty much the same time. While groups like Boston & Heart were all taking their score of hits as well. What a great time to be alive and the music was phenomenal. This album contributed so much to the landscape of that era. There isn't a bad song on this album. If you don't own it, you really should. Honestly..

If the only song that you ever connected with from Manfred Mann's Earth Band was BLINDED BY THE LIGHT and you forgot which disc that song was hidden on ..well struggle no more as it is tucked away on this CD. So now you can go out and relive all those days when you used to listen to this track while being involved in the many other activities which the late 70's could afford you without much trouble. For me the song became rather blighted because I had people calling me up at the station every half hour if not more demanding that I play the Manfred man song again...If I had done that we would never heard anything else yawn! The Biggest thing with having a tune that is that successful on a disc is that it completely overshadows the rest of the disc. All the other songs have an awful time trying to compete with that and so the entire event ends up appearing weak while that really is not the case at all. The other songs may indeed have a great deal of merit of their own but will always fall in the shadow of the super-song that was wrongly positioned as the first track on the disc while it should have been the last. That is a failure of the Producer who in this case was Manfred Mann himself and how do you tell the writer, producer, arranger and creator that his vision is all wrong, simple answer...you don't ! Another 'I remember when' review, but revisiting this album 38 years since first hearing it, I still have nothing but praise for it. From the opening 7-minute full version of Springsteen's Blinded By The Light until the closing Questions, are 7 tracks of the highest quality prog-infested MMEB. The compositions, shared by several band members, are generally thoughtful with a subtle attack free from pomp and bluster. Perhaps the wildest moment is Barbara Thompson's sax solo on Singing The Dolphin Through, a slow beautiful Mike Heron song that slips by serenely.
Like all the musicians' playing, Chris Thompson's singing is perfectly understated throughout, strong but without any theatrics or hysteria. On the instrumental Waiter, There's A Yawn In My Ear, the musicians cut loose (on the vinyl, this closed side one with style and gusto. There are no weak moments on this album which should be a fixture in every prog afficiando's collection. You should not need too many listens to love this masterpiece. This cd re-issue includes the bonus tracks of Spirits In The Night and the single edit of Blinded By The Light.
Oh, and those '70s synthesizer sounds make me smile with every listen.
