Ritual of Love is an early 1990s-centric, R&B, and New Jack Swing album. This album is a serious nostalgic trip, with the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis producing most of this album. That incomparable duo was in their prime in the mid 1980s to the early 1990s. And it's nostalgic too because Karyn White was in her prime from 1988 to 1992, as she has never been as well known or never better vocally than she was in that period.
My favorite songs on this album are Hard to Say Goodbye (track 12) which is the last track on the album, and that should tell you a lot about the quality of this album. Then there's Romantic (track 1), The Way I Feel About You (track 3) and Do Unto Me (track 11). The common theme among those songs is that all four of them were blessed with good writing and memorable beat production.
If there was a song on this album that could have been left on the cutting room floor it would have to be track 5, Walkin the Dog. The only thing I liked about that song was the beat, but the lyrics and the theme of the song are not for me.
It's kind of sad that this album would be White's last hit album, as her next two albums were quickly forgotten. This album and her debut album (1988) were true testaments of White's singing talent. There was so much more to her career, but pregnancy, depression, and divorce would knock her career off track for a while.
In conclusion, Ritual of Love was a very well written and very well produced album that went Gold less than five months after its Fall 1991 release. The album still stands up 31 years later and it is required listening to those who want to harken back to the glory days of R&B music, or for those who were just introduced to Karyn White's music.
