This mighty monster of an account sounds more like a century than thirty years old but it is at least more successful than Barenboim's earlier recording and has a certain "period" (in the unfashionable sense) appeal. I bought it for at least two of the soloists; certainly three of them are very distinctive, two positively so for my taste and one rather less so. Kathleen Battle is angelic, especially in the "Benedictus" and I have long been a fan of Davd Rendall's distinctive, vibrant tenor; both singes are highly individual and add much to this big-scale performance, inflecting their words sensitively. Matti Salminen's bass I find rather lugubrious and "ingolato" of tone, not blending very well with the other singers; mezzo Ann Murray is in good voice but unremarkable.
is is a very solemn, grand account, redolent of 19C velvet, silk brocade and black armbands. However, it is certainly not lifeless or stately; the choir sing themselves hoarse and when they shout "Rex" sound more like an irate dog-owner standing in the middle of the park and they positively yell "Dies Irae". Their words are rather mushy owing to the voluminous of the the recording location acoustic and Barenboim seems to have persuaded his French forces to sound more stentorian and Prussian than Bismarck. It is all very imposing in its own way and I admire the energy and attack of all concerned, even if I'm not sure whether the end result really what Mozart had in mind. It#s certainly large-scale Romantic in its sensibility, especially with an organ underpinning the sonorities, but full marks to the choir for commitment.
