'Recovering the Satellites' is the second studio album by American rock band Counting Crows, released in 1996, in the United States. Released three years (and two years of worldwide touring) after their debut album, it reached No. 1 in the United States and was a top seller in Australia, Canada, and the UK as well. For years, singer Adam Duritz felt this was his favorite album by the band. Joining Duritz in recording the album were founding band members David Bryson (guitar), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), Matt Malley (bass), as well as new additions Ben Mize (drums) and Dan Vickrey (guitars). Multi-instrumentalist David Immerglück played on the album as a session musician as well. Counting Crows brought in producer Gil Norton for 'Recovering the Satellites'. (The track "Miller's Angels" was produced by Marvin Etzioni.) Three singles were released from the album, with "A Long December" being the best charting, reaching number 6 in the US and number 1 in Canada. The album itself peaked on the top spot of the Billboard Hot 200 album chart and has been certified double-platinum in both the US and Canada.

Recovering the Satellites may not be quite the tower of song that the Crows' debut August and Everything After was, but it could hardly be called a sophomore slump. Vocalist Adam Duritz and crew mine similar territory on the more densely produced Satellites, couching tales of dreamers, lovers, and losers in music that's part classic rock redux and part heartfelt folk jangle. As able as the band is though, it remains Duritz's show, and his plaintive voice and serpentine lyrics are what drive this record home, particularly on "Daylight Fading", "Miller's Angels" and the aching hit "A Long December." --Michael Ruby

２枚組 45rpm！

アナログ盤のチョットした情報を書いておきます。
ある海外のサイトを見てたらこの２枚組LPが「45回転仕様」の記述があって逆に「イヤ買ったら33¹/₂回転だったぞ」
などと何人かの人が書いてました。これはトータルで14曲59分なので2枚組になるのは分かるけど前から思ってたのは
例えば60分ぐらいの作品を2枚組にしたら45回転も可能なんじゃないかと。でも滅多にお目にかかったことが無い。
「45回転」を期待しつつダメ元で買いました。　’17年発売で JAN: 0602557097603 Made in EU

外装のシールやジャケ裏にそれらしき表示が無く最後の砦として中のレコード盤を見たら回転数など書かれてない。
ガッカリして普通に33¹/₂回転で再生したら凄まじい音が流れてきた！　

そうです「45回転仕様」だったんです！　買ってよかったぁ～。当然だが音もよい。
ダウンロードクーポンも入ってました。しかしどこにも何の表示も無いのはオカシイナ。
内容は言う間でも無く捨て曲無しで稀代のヴォーカリスト率いるツワモノたちの演奏が4面に記録されてます。
自分は’96年発売当時にCDを愛聴してたがコレ聴いてると当時のUK新人バンドなんか聴いてられなかったよ。
お子ちゃま丸出しで。

※’18年にコレのカラーヴァイナル盤が出てるが「45rpm」かどうかは不明です。同様に
デビュー作「August and～」の仕様も分かりません。

映画のワンシーン（やっぱり西部劇？）を切り取ったようなドラマチックな展開。演奏も録音も確かな良質な音楽。そして、おやじでも安心して聴ける正当派アメリカンロック。星の数は少ないけれどもわりと好きですよ。

正統なアメリカンロックのスピリッツを持つCounting Crowsの２ｎｄ。前作の１ｓｔアルバムはフォーキーなルーツロックであったが、本作品はアップテンポのロックが多くなり、かつ前作同様レベルの高いメロディアスな楽曲が犇めく傑作。セールス面でも成功した作品。本物のアメリカンロックを聴きたい人にはお奨め。

　デビュー作『オウガスト・アンド・エブリシング・アフター』の成功に続く、彼らの名を世界に知らしめることになった２作目。メンバーも５人からギター、ボーカルのダン・ウ゛ィッカリーを加え６人編成となった。これが結果、非常によかった・・１作目のアメリカルーツ的な音楽とボーカルでメインソングライターのアダム・デューリッツの包み込むような温もりを感じる声、言葉数の多い歌詞やメロディー感覚など非常に感銘を受けた作品であるのに、また新たな血を注入する事で、曲にメリハリと力強さが感じられ、ソングライティングについてもアダムのみでなく他のメンバーが関与しているところからも、さらにバンドの一体感が顕著にでています・・ダン・ウ゛ィッカリーのプレイが非常に大きな存在感で機能していると感じます。この後２作のオリジナルとライブ盤があり、どれも甲乙つけがたい作品ばかりではありますが、聴いた回数から今作がベストです。
　THE BANDやTOM PETTY、REM、DAVE MATHEWSなどに例えられ音そのものは確かに似通ってはいますが、バンドは大きく２タイプあって、個々の強烈な個性がぶつかり相乗効果を爆発的に生むもの（ビートルズ型）と一つの目的に一丸邁進するタイプ（国民英雄型）で、このバンドは後者寄り・・REM、D.MATHEWSなどに近いと思います。ですから、個人的には歴史的名盤ではなく超愛着盤なんです。

前作のアコースティックな作風とは打って変ってエレキ・ギターを大胆に導入した２ND。ただ、最高に美しいメロディーは勿論健在。全体的にアグレッシヴな演奏が目立つ。アレンジもいい。この作品でCOUNTING CROWSは彼らが本物だということを証明した。捨て曲なんて当然ない。普遍的な音楽を聴きたい人はマスト。

Counting Crows have been flying with the satellites ever since this album's predecessor "August & Everything After." Although most of the Crows' work after this album was greatly ignored by fans of 'August' I still don't believe they've ever put out a bad album. In fact, I believe in this case, the 2nd time is the charm. This album is packed with a punch compared to August. The drums are louder. The guitars are sharper. And Adam's voice, as you probably guessed, is just as serenading as usual. His emotional whines drive you through this masterpiece and leave you wanting more. The band really shines on this one and Adam writes his heart out. In my personal opinion...THIS is the magnum opus.

For starters, "Catapult" was one of the first Crows songs I ever heard. The sheer nostalgia of it still rings in my ears every time I give it a spin. The guitar wails at the end of the song are killer and serve as a great intro to "Angels of the Silences" which to this day is my favorite song that made it onto the 'Films About Ghosts' compilation. It's a killer fast-paced rocker with thoughtful and poetic access to Adam's dreams. "Daylight Fading" is a classic Grateful Dead-esque ballad, or so that's the vibe it gave me. Speak for yourself. While you're at it, listen to "I'm Not Sleeping" when you're actually sleepy...it gives it an even crazier quality than what it already had! "Goodnight Elizabeth" is a sweet lullaby that makes me wonder if it's a predecessor to the song "I Wish I Was A Girl" that's featured on Desert Life which carries the lyric "Hey Elizabeth, you know I'm doing alright these days." "Children in Bloom" is a very heavy grungy powerhouse with a melancholy chorus hook and as if that wasn't enough, "Have You Seen Me Lately?" takes yet another personal step into Duritz's anxiety toward fame. "Miller's Angels" is one of my favorite Crows ballads. Soft and sweet, but at 6:32 you get your money's worth. The moody and dynamic "Another Horsedreamer's Blues" follows up Miller. Add Margery to the same boat of girls that Duritz has encountered (at least in songwriting). Adam's vocals are killer on this track. His melancholy ba da nah nah nah's make this a standout Crows epic. The title track of the album is probably one of my all time favorite Crows songs as well, and yes I know I have a lot of them but how could you not? It reminds me of Van Morrison, almost as much as Mr. Jones did. Except this song gives off more of the ballad side of Morrison-esque music. More along the lines of "Into the Mystic" or "St. Dominic's Preview" than "Brown Eyed Girl." Next you have the trilogy of songs that wind down the album starting with "Monkey" with steady piano that reminds you of the later hit "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby". But the most standout cuts are yet to come with the bluesy yet twangy harmonica driven "Mercury" followed by the legendary "Long December" which might possibly be the loneliest cut of Adam Duritz's entire career of songwriting...which really is saying something. And just like the Beatles had "Her Majesty" Counting Crows have "Walkaways" which is a short and sweet acoustic outro to the album.

There you have it folks, and don't let this review ruin it for you. Pick this CD up and see for yourself how powerful Counting Crows are really capable of being.

Some People Still Don't Get It

Most people who have heard Counting Crows only know their first album "August and Everything After" and most of them LOVE it. Which is good. I am happy for them, but what I find is that a lot of them hate this one. It's still the same guys (well Steve Bowman had left the band at this point and they had a new drummer Ben who rocks) and Adam is still writing the same heartfelt lyrics. He just a little bit more angry on this record. Counting Crows was propelled from Nowheresville to superstardom almost overnight. "Mr. Jones" broke and boom! They became "Somebodies" and that was a hard transition, if you can't hear it in the songs, read some of the interviews, the time between this album and the first was a tumultous one. Adam was angry at all the bad stuff that comes with being a rock star and there is a lot of things you have to get over. Like everyone knowing who you are, wherever you go. I mean, we all think that would be cool, but believe me, I know the coolness would rub off FAST for me. This is a beautifully written album, my favorite track is "Another Horsedreamer's Blues" don't even have to think about that, it's a no brainer. I admit I was like a lot people when I didn't get this album, but he captures the anger in his sadness and the starkness of winter so well. Maybe that's why people don't get it, it hits too close to home, I could understand that. But if you heard this once and never have again, you're missing out. This was a powerful sophmore album and I love it as much as the first, but for different reasons of course.

Well, first, the CD. This is Counting Crows second CD (Album) release and it's a very good followup to their first release, "August and Everything." It includes a bit of orchestration, which I'm not fond of, but it's not too much and it's not really overwhelming. Otherwise, the songs are all pretty good with a couple of really fine rockers. And, of course, the vocals can be stunning.
This particular copy was some kind of special promotion that came with, of all things, a WATCH!. As advertised, the CD was in very good shape (used); the watch was included, and would you believe, it works!

This release from Counting Crows contains three songs that I felt strongly enough about, to add the CD to my collection.

My favorite cut here is the radio friendly "A Long December", which sounds anything but wintry. To me, it's like the musical equivalent of watching the sunset on the beach during a long hot July instead. Since I was a little girl, I've been a lover of music with what I deem a "summer" sound. This song has a beautiful melody and a catchy la-la sing along hook. That, and the ("Gee Dad It's a") Wurlitzer organ and piano utilized by lead vocalist and keyboard player Adam Duritz, give "...December", a great retro feel as well. A beautiful soulful and melancholy masterpiece sung touchingly by Duritz. The other notably good songs here are sweet rockers "Daylight Fading", and "Have You Seen Me Lately". They too, have great melody, catchy hooks and that terrific summery mood. There are more, but those are THE best in my opinion. You must listen and make the call on your own favorites. The key is, you MUST listen. This CD has an all around soft, yet powerfully engaging summery retro sound all it's own that deserves a place in your collection too.

The Counting Crows second album takes some getting used to if you've started with their excellent 1993 debut. If you aren't particularly too thrilled with it at first, just keep listening. Keep it spinning in your car, or wherever, as it should most likely grow on you as it did with me. I have to admit it's a decent balance of hit and miss; it starts out solid, falters a bit in the middle, then returns for the better.

My favorite tracks are "Daylight Fading", "Goodnight Elizabeth", "Miller's Angels", "Monkey", and "A Long December" (my favorite)

All in all, a generally louder and more intense sophmore record from the Crows that should grow on you if you are initially disappointed. I recommend it.
