Whether or not you enjoy this book probably has a lot to do with how interested you are in Groucho Marx. I found this book fascinating, a study of Groucho's last few years, told by someone who worked in his house everyday, cataloguing his memorabilia and other odd jobs. If this was just a "I knew Groucho" memoir, it would still be pretty interesting. But Stoliar is a good writer and storyteller, making this book highly readable and very enjoyable. Much has been hypothesized about Groucho's relationship with his "manager" Erin Fleming, but Stoliar was there and saw it all. Most biographies of Groucho dedicate just a few pages to Groucho's declining years; to have a whole book about them is wonderful, and to have the story so well-told is an unexpected pleasure.
