My 3yo son loves this story. I know many people also loves this, but I hate this story. This book tells The rainbow fish is unlike the other because he has many shiny scales, and the other fish are jealous of them. Friendship isn't easy.
My daughter's nursery had a week of 'rainbow fish' and she couldn't stop talking about it so I decided to buy the book for at home. She loves it, and I appreciate the message of the story as well as the beautiful illustrations. It's a firm favorite in our house!
I read this story to a group of preschoolers this week and asked them what they thought the message was. They all agreed it was, "sharing is kind." The complex analysis voiced by others is way over the heads of most 3-4 years olds, and by the time they can critique it to that level, they will have moved on.
Beautiful book, lovely story. My 3 year old loves it and asks for it to be read again and again. The story is brilliant and is about being kind and sharing. Good bed time read

I knew the story having read it to the pupils when I was teaching. It's very easy for quite young children to understand the importance of sharing through the narrative and the extra stories in the Rainbow Fish anthology also get their message across ( they also have a moral ) clearly. Beautiful illustrations too.
