At first I was puzzled by the design: tiny screen, obscure buttons and not immediately clear how to use it.
The unit, however, comes with an illustrated manual so just by holding one button for 3 seconds, the geiger activated and started taking readings.
Thankfully, no pre-calibration or any kind of set-up was required. The little "n" letter appears on the screen after 10 seconds, meaning that the readings have stabilized and are accurate.
I tested the unit alongside with several other much more expensive units I own (Rad Alert, RD1008 and Mazur models) on uranium ore and the results were accurate on 0.30 (normal) and up to 4.30 uSv/h (readings from the ore).
- surprisingly accurate
- small, slick, portable pocket-size
- large sensor for its size
- one of the least expensive units I have seen
- measure in micro-sieverts - International SI standard units
- comes with a handy strap
- initially takes some getting used to. Especially the buttons
- tiny, unconventional screen
- because it is small, I actually lost it in my backpack twice.
- No PC software support that I could find
Conclusion: inexpensive, yet slick with accuracy on par with the other geigers I have compared it to.
Fine unit indeed.
In any case, not trusting their equipment, I purchased this (at my own expense) if for nothing more than a "second opinion."
After wearing it for several days, I got an alarm. I contacted management, they said there's nothing. They got another gieger (more sensitive) and guess what? Stray radiation source. Duh...My dosimeter detected it but theirs did not. Which do I have confidence in now?
Yes, I recommend this device. I further recommend getting their software as there's been several updates since I got this. The SW is nice, but I'd wish it would export the data to a CSV file (suggestion).
As for the supplier, item was shipped in a timely manner and is everything advertised.
In summary, if you think you need a dosimeter, you probably do, and I recommend this one.
Very poorly made. Many points of failure on both. Buttons braking off ON BOTH, display glass unglued on one (it is held by sticky stuff, not strongly at all), geiger tube wire broke on one and needed soldering. So, it was not a case of one bad unit. It's how they are really built.
Both of mine are no longer in use.
I'm not interested in Radex responses to this message like "contact us and we will make you happy and replace your unites". Not another Radex.
I found better detectors from other manufacturers, which are my present work horses & they have no reliability issues. There're good manufacturers and solid instruments around if you do some research. Q-safe, Polimaster series and AtomFast to give a few examples.
Pros: Small, discreet, light weight, very easy to use, works great. Audio and adjustable level alert. Battery life is fantastic ~ 19 days. Measured a known test source and the unit was very accurate. Shows current levels, and accumulated dose. PC software for data logging. Excellent buy for the price. I would buy another.
Cons: No back light on the display. The display may be a slightly difficult to read for older people.
Helpful hint: It has a lanyard but if you carry it in your pants pocket place the clip the front button side to help keep it from turning on.
It was about 3 months after I purchased the Radex One that I had a minor problem. The secondary clear protective cover that protects the LCD screen detached from the unit. It is held in place by a clear glue. I emailed Quarta Rad with the Amazon order info and asked for a replacement LCD cover. The Regional Manager, Dmitry replied that the Radex One had a 1 year warranty and they were shipping out a new replacement unit, and to simply ship the old unit back usps. I received the new one 2 days later. Wow talk about fast and eager to please, these guys went way above anything I expected. If you need a compact accurate Geiger / Dosimeter at a good price, this is definitely the one to get. Quarta-Rad, you ROCK!
I have had this unit for a year now. The Radex One is a perfect grab and go unit. The compact size makes it very easy to take along, and discrete to use. The fast 10 second response time for the first reading is impressive with the best reading after 30 seconds.
The sensitive internal geiger tube runs virtually the length of the unit, which places it in class with much larger hand held units.
There is a vibration and soft audio alert that can be enabled as well as an adjustable received dose level alert. The battery life
is fantastic ~ 19 days of continuous use with an energizer battery. I measured a known test source and the unit was very accurate,
within a small percent of a unit that was 4 times as expensive. The display shows current levels, and accumulated dose. PC software
for data logging. Excellent buy for the price. I would recommend it for anyone and I would buy another.
