It's no coincidence that UB40's biggest hits and most pleasurable songs have been their reggae rock remakes of other acts' songs--Neil Diamond's "Red Red Wine", Sonny & Cher's "I Got You Babe", the Chi-Lites' "Homely Girl", Bob Dylan's "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight", and so on. Only one of the 11 numbers on Promises and Lies is a cover tune, but the band's remake of Elvis Presley's "Can't Help Falling in Love" is a real treat. Featured in the film Sliver, the ballad gets a new momentum from UB40's horns and rhythm section and finds its obsessive quality reinforced by the reggae-dub echoes. The album also includes "Reggae Music", a delightful dancehall workout which neatly balances Astro's reggae toasting against Ali and Robin Campbell's sweetly sung pop soul hook. Unfortunately, the other nine songs are full of steady grooves and admirable sentiments but little in the way of melody or fresh ideas that might separate them from hundreds of similar reggae exercises. --Geoffrey Himes

往年のコテコテな灼熱レゲェとは違いポップ感覚のサンシャインレゲェな感じです。穏やか緩やかスローな心地よい感覚、ゆっくり時間が流れる涼しげな音楽です。好きにならずにいられない、まさに愛すべき夏のサウンドです。

Once reggae was made popular by Bob Marley, there were, and still are, those who have tried to duplucate his message and sound. UB40 only kept the sound. By creating their own message, they were able to make their mark on popular music, yes popular. Though still considered Reggae, UB40 was and is enjoyed by those listening to it fot the first time not knowing what Reggae is. Higher Ground, and Promises and Lies are my two favorites. See if you can discover your own.

Ich habe diese CD gekauft weil ich mit des Songs viele schöne , manche auch traurige Erinnerungen verbinde.
Zu der Zeit als sie rauskam habe ich mit meinem Sohn im Ausland gelebt. Mein Sohn ist vor kurzem verstorben , aber wenn ich mir die CD
anhöre und die Augen schließe, ist er bei mir und mir fallen alle schönen Momente ein, die ich mit ihm erlebte. Auch mein verstorbener Mann ist dann da und ich bin mit meinen Lieben vereint (für eine kurze Zeit wenigstens)
