Princess Ten Ten is the Guardian of the Skies. She helps fight the terrible air pollution that has darkened the once beautiful skies of her city. As a child she is bullied because she is different. But she perseveres. This story teaches readers about East Asian cultures, how to overcome bullying and take better care of our planet.
It’s a well written, and well-paced book featuring a princess super-heroine. Compared to the trilogy by GP, this book is longer and features a more involved plot that delves deeper into Ten Ten’s past and development from childhood, so it may be suited for slightly older children between the ages of 6 to 9. The story is wonderful, and blends heroic action with how the princess grapples with issues such as environmentalism, coping with bullying, and gender norms in uplifting and inspiring manner.
The book features tons and tons of colorful illustrations that will keep the children’s interest and helps to fully realize the characters and scenes. I have no complaints about the visuals, and I think children will especially respond well to seeing the action sequences through pictures.
This is definitely the book for parents that want to read their children a socially progressive book that deals with a protagonist that would be a suitable role model for children of any gender, while providing a peak into East Asian cultures- primarily Chinese culture.
