内容紹介

The houses in Pine Estates are beautiful McMansions filled with high-achieving parents, children on the fast track to top colleges, all of the comforts of modern living, and the best security systems money can buy. Welcome to normal upper-middle-class suburbia.

The Turners know in their hearts that they're anything but normal. Jenna is a high-schooler dressed in black who is fascinated with breaking into her neighbors' homes, security systems be damned. Everett genuinely believes he loves his wife . . . he just loves having a continuing stream of mistresses more. JT is a genius kid with Asperger's who moves from one obsession to the next. And Kate tries to manage her family, manage her mother (who lives down the street), and avoid wondering why her life is passing her by.

And now everything is changing for them. Jenna suddenly finds herself in a boy-next-door romance she never could have predicted. Everett's secrets are beginning to unravel on him. JT is getting his first taste of success at navigating the world. And Kate is facing truths about her husband, her mother, and her father that she might have preferred not to face.

Life on Pine Road has never been more challenging for the Turners. That's what happens when you're practicing normal.

Combining her trademark combination of wit, insight, and tremendous empathy for her characters, Cara Sue Achterberg has written a novel that is at once familiar and startlingly fresh.

"Does facing the truth beat living a lie? In PRACTICING NORMAL, Cara Sue Achterberg has given us a smart story that is both a window and a mirror, about the extraordinary pain ― and the occasional gifts ― of an ordinary life."
– Jacquelyn Mitchard, New York Times bestselling author of THE DEEP END OF THE OCEAN

"What does it really mean to have a normal life? Achterberg's stunning new novel explores how a family can fracture just trying to survive, and how what makes us different is also what can make us most divine."
– Caroline Leavitt, author of CRUEL BEAUTIFUL WORLD and the New York Times bestsellers PICTURES OF YOU and IS THIS TOMORROW

"PRACTICING NORMAL takes a deep dive into the dysfunctional dynamics of a 'picture perfect family.' A compelling story about the beautiful humanity in the most ordinary of lives: from first love to a marriage on the downward slide to an unexpected family tragedy. Achterberg handles each thread with tender care and we can't help but root for every member of the Turner family."
– Kate Moretti, New York Times bestselling author of THE VANISHING YEAR

“There is some major drama in this story as well as some great suspense and – a great ending to boot!”
– Wall-to-Wall Books

“This is a delightful look at family and all their failings.”
– Books Direct

“A riveting and engrossing story that I could not put down. I am the newest fan of Ms. Achterberg! I highly recommend this extraordinary novel!”

How many of us at times feel overwhelmed and all alone? We tend to get swept away in the tsunami of everyday life. This is what is happening when we meet Kate, Jenna, JT, and Everett. Kate is caught in the sandwich generation – trying to deal with her rebellious and unhappy teenage daughter, her son with Asperger’s, her cheating husband, and a demanding mother who might be suffering from dementia. Jenna, the teenage daughter, though acting out by breaking into houses and sporting a goth look, is a beautiful person inside and out. JT is hard to get to know at first because of his issues, but grows into your heart as the book progresses. Everett is despicable, but then sometimes he isn’t. Cara Sue Achterberg reveals these complex characters, their histories, and their motivations by allowing the reader to get inside their heads and read their thoughts as they deal with both their present situations and their pasts. I had trouble putting Practicing Normal down at night because I always wanted to know more about what is driving these characters and how they might resolve their many issues. The other characters that appear in this book, including the grandmother, the neighbors, and JT’ teachers, are also compelling and add interesting twists to the story. I finished this book a few days ago and I already miss this family and their neighbors. Maybe the author could write a sequel? I’d love to get immersed in these characters’ lives once again – especially Jenna and the neighborhood “cat-lady,” Cassie.

5つ星のうち 5.0 Who is "Normal"? 2017/5/9

Cara Achterberg has written a novel that examines a family that shows us just how hard it is to be “normal”. We may think we want to be like our neighbors, but when we get too close they may not be who we think they are. Even with in our own family that may also be the case. The Turners have much going on with each member that many of us would not see as “normal”, or drive us crazy!. Cara has great character development and is able to convey the feelings in not only the 4 Turner family members but also those who are neighbors & extended family. Once I started the book it was hard to put down. I became involved & was rooting for Kate, Jenna & JT to find their own way. The book has caused me to examine “normal” in my own life & how I treat or deal with those who I may perceive as “not normal” & sometimes very irritating. I am perhaps like Kate, in that I want everyone to be happy & get along & that is not always the way life works. It may cause may of us to examine how judgmental we are of those we consider not “normal”. A well written novel! Great read & hard to put down!

5つ星のうち 5.0 Set aside time to read this book. 2017/5/14

This was a fascinating book about what the family down the street can be going through. The characters in this book were all extremely interesting in their own way - some of them I cheered on and others I booed but I wanted to keep reading to find out how it all turned out for all of them. It was told through the eyes of several of the persons in the story so you got to feel involved with them. You could tell that the author spent time investigating the problems JT had and the issues Cassie dealt with at her job. Absolutely would recommend this book. Loved it!

Fantastic read! Brought it to read on vacation, but finished it in a day. Couldn't put it down! Loved the complexity of the characters and how nothing was actually how it seemed at the beginning. Very funny parts, a couple sad parts, but leaves you hopeful. Great book that I HIGHLY recommend.

I was hooked immediately! Some of these characters were hard to like at first. It was definitely a "real life story" and hit on some tough topics. So well written! Another great read from Cara!
