Robert Hawker's "Portions" are a delightful, uplifting and edifying collection of short writings for every bible-loving Christian. Thoroughly recommended.
I was introduced to Robert Hawker's writing through funny title of his commentary, 'The Poor Man's Commentary.' As I read his commentary, I immediately noticed how Christo-centric his comments were. He sees Christ everywhere in the Scriptures and applies to the hearts of believers, exhorting them to trust in this wonderful Savior. I was hooked. I wanted to read his writings more regularly and I thought his devotional book, 'The Poor Man's Morning and Evening' would be an excellent choice. I was not disappointed.
1. The devotional book is divided into morning & evening portions. Each portion deals with one or two verses. He explains the verse and immediately applies to the reader Christo-centrically. He is very apt at this. 2. Each portion (either morning or evening) ends with prayer, which is woven into his comments. I love this! My heart echoes his sentiment. 3. His words are easy to understand even though it was written about 200 years ago. Some words are archaic, but his meaning overall is clear and understandable. 4. The book has Scripture Index at the end of the book, where you can easily access any verse you might be searching. 5. The print is NOT modern (ie fonts are slightly blurry - not computerized prints, but old typeset), so you might need to get use to it. I hope in the future, the publisher will publish modern typeset edition.
All in all, I love this book! It is indeed "Christ everywhere" book for the soul!

I love Robert Hawker's books - his commentaries and his devotional book. He is so Christ-centered in his approach, he sees Christ everywhere! This is refreshing to the soul!.
I own the book,
The Poor Man's Morning and Evening Portions
and I love it! So I thought having a Kindle edition will be great for my smartphone and my pc, but alas, Kindle edition has serious flaws:
1. You cannot find the dates for your devotion. It is arranged by the pages, and not according to dates. So you have to kind of figure it out by browsing through the content. This is inconvenient. 2. Some devotions are dated (but you cannot search by dates)and others are not. This is very poorly designed.
One positive note: the typeset is modern in Kindle but not in the book. If you do not mind the bulkiness of the book, get the book. But if you do not mind the flaws in Kindle, then Kindle edition is still great for its content!
No one does a better job of discovering Christ throughout the pages of the Bible, and of appealing to his readers to embrace whole-heartedly the blessedness of Christ and His working in our lives.
An excellent devotional to give as a gift to anyone high-school age or older.
